Today we pause to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. On a campus with deep ties to the military community, this day carries particular weight. We are grateful. 🇺🇸

The final concert for the Hendricks Chapel Choir in South Africa was paired with the University of the Western Cape Creative Arts Choir at the historic Saint George’s Cathedral in Cape Town, where Archbishop Desmond Tutu spent many years growing the Cathedral into a cultural connection point during apartheid. Much like Hendricks Chapel of Syracuse University, the Cathedral is known as a place of prayer and dedicated worship, and a space where people of all faiths, Christian, Jew, Muslim and Hindu, can meet in common acceptance of one another. During the struggle against apartheid, it became known as the ‘People’s Cathedral’ for its witness against oppressive and unjust laws. We also all enjoyed a special visit from local and global celebrity, . 💖 Thank you to all who supported this amazing journey for the Hendricks Chapel Choir! This experience will be remembered for a lifetime. We are also grateful to all our hosts, guides and drivers who opened their hearts to our choir. Thanks to all of South Africa for being a landscape of lasting friendships. We are filled with gratitude. 🧡🇿🇦🧡

The Hendricks Chapel Choir is an auditioned ensemble representing many of the colleges and majors available at Syracuse University and the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. One of many all-student choirs within the Setnor School of Music, The Hendricks Chapel Choir rehearses once weekly on Thursday evenings, and meets for sectional rehearsals for an additional hour per week. The choir performs regularly at 4:00 p.m. on Sundays as part of Hendricks Chapel’s Malmgren Concert Series and other programming, and regularly services major University events including Remembrance Scholars Convocation, the University Service of Commemoration, and the International Thanksgiving Dinner. The choir travels internationally approximately every four years, and has completed tours in China, Prague, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Germany, Poland, Mexico, and most recently the United Kingdom. The choir plans to complete visits to every inhabited continent by its Centennial Jubilee with a trip to Australia and New Zealand in 2030. A proud Syracuse area tradition, and the oldest extant choir on our campus, past and present members of the Hendricks Chapel Choir embody the best parts of Syracuse University: our students’ desire to serve one another, their university, their community, and their world.

The Hendricks Chapel Choir visited the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir School, an internationally-acclaimed, non-profit boarding school situated in the Champagne Valley of the Central Drakensberg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

The choirs combined for vocal and physical warmups and exchanged songs, sang “Tshotsholoza” together and then our choir handed out “be kind.” stickers!

Young men are accepted at Drakensberg between the ages of 9-15 and are then recruited to other schools and colleges across South Africa. They must wait for 6-12 months before being allowed to perform in concerts. Many of their students have gone on to local fame and others, like Warren Driscoll, have gone on to work globally. Driscoll is in a starring role as Freddie Mercury in Showtime Australia’s long-running hit stage show “Queen: It’s a Kinda Magic.”
