Today we said “Thank you” and “Goodbye” to the 65+ year old cherry tree in our backyard. If you’ve followed the Chapel of Ease for a while, you know we park our camper in our hilariously small and pothole-filled driveway. The dream is to someday redo the driveway and park the camper in the garage, which is/was being uprooted by this large tree.

It’s a sadness to cut down a tree. Trees clean the air. Trees promote healthy soil. Trees create habitats. Trees keep us cool. Trees hold memories and energy. So this decision was not made lightly. But it was made with gratitude for all it has done for us, and a promise that its life was not in vain.

We were also grateful that was able to cut a slice of the tree for us. I don’t know what we’ll do with it yet, but will take low-commitment ideas (ie: I don’t have the time to turn it into a gorgeous coffee table). They’ve been a wonderful company to work with, and I 100% recommend them.

Confession: most of the time when I say I’m going camping, I don’t mean I’m heading out into the wilderness. I don’t mean I’m roughing it in the woods, cooking meals over a campfire, making complex bathroom strategies and preparing my bear spray.

Most of the time, I mean that I’m gonna pop up my camper in someone’s driveway, plug it right into the wall, use their kitchen and bathroom, and listen to nature while I sleep. Usually, I mean I’m gonna fill the mini-fridge with bubbly water and beer, and let my kids be kids, and detour for kitschy roadside attractions.

I love exploring, but what the Chapel of Ease has taught me the best is to notice what’s in front of me, and I don’t have to work too hard for it.

Slipped a quick trip in this week— Wednesday night til Saturday morning— to be with our D’Agostino niblings and most of my husband’s siblings. Parked our camper right in the driveway. Plugged it in. Ate good food. Level ground.

An extremely gentle third night of camping at a site outside Cincinnati. Thinking about how I’d like to post on my Chapel of Ease account a bit more often, at least when applicable. Tonight is reading, music, frogs, humid but not wet. Lovely and easy.
