Matthew 22:34-40
The Greatest Commandment

34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Mark 12:28-31
The Greatest Commandment

28 One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”

29 “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

Showing love and Receiving love…

An important part of discipleship is “love.” For so many people showing love and receiving love can be very difficult and even confusing.

Maybe someone hurt you, they used love as a weapon, or it was just awkward. On the flip side, maybe you had a great example and the standard is really high. Nobody seems to be able to meet those high standards and expectations. There are so many different scenarios.

As a learning point. “Often we show love the way we want to receive it.” Knowing this will help us understand ourselves and understand each other. This can take some of the fog out of our intersections and we are able to recognize others attempts to show us love and we become more strategic for others. Some of our simple actions can have significant impacts.

Our prayer for Encounter is that as a church community we never stop growing in the word of God, learn to be practical and Biblical in our everyday friendships, marriages, and social outlets.

Ask the questions…

1) How do you feel love and how do you show it?

2) How does God make you feel feel love and how do you show God love?

The Word…

Romans 12:9-21

9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.

17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. 18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”says the Lord. 20 On the contrary:

“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;

if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”

21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
