Dear Parishioners and Visitors,
Just as the trees fill in and gardens are being planted,
the Church’s own color-coded calendar returns to the color
green with our re-entry into Ordinary Time. In English,
“ordinary” means plain or not special. But, in Latin, from
which the term comes, ordinary simply means ordered
according to number—and so, we enter now the 11th week of
this ordered, numbered liturgical calendar. Speaking of
numbers, ask any kid (or teacher) and they’ll tell you exactly
how many days are left of school as we inch toward summer
break, a time of year that is far from ordinary. A question
that we might ask ourselves is, “what can I do this summer
that is outside of the ordinary?”
This is not a question about exotic summer vacations
or bucket-list adventures. It can be a deeply spiritual
question in the face of economic hardship for most
Americans, political strife at home and abroad, and a
widening gap between rich and poor, haves and have-nots.
We as a Church need to find ways to support one another,
speak out against injustices and speak up about the rights of
all, and be a beacon of hope to many who are tired and
despairing of the American dream. We can find, through the
inspiration of the Holy Spirit and the guidance of the Gospel,
ways to strengthen our bonds with one another, regardless of
ideological affiliation, in order to lighten the burden of
difficult times, and be the presence of Christ to a society
fraught with disillusionment. In short, our commitment to
God and to one another can turn the ordinary difficulties of
life in an opportunity for extraordinary care for one another.
Let us pray for one another throughout this coming
week, and may God bless you,
Fr. Michael

The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Pray for Us!

On June 11, 2026, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) held a historic, formal Consecration of the United States to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. This event took place at the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe in Orlando, Florida, during their spring assembly.

"In sin, death; in Christ, life. the choice before us is clear. Let us pray for the grace to choose wisely, faithfully, and well all the days of our life. (Magnificat May 2026, Vol. 28, No. 3.)

"We cannot be united with God unless we freely choose to love him. And if we don't freely choose to love him, by sinning gravely against him or by against our neighbor or against ourselves, we are de facto choosing hell. And to die in mortal sin without repenting and accepting God's merciful love means remaining separated from him forever by our own free choice. And this is what it is to be in hell. In paragraph 1035, it says this, that the chief punishment of hell is eternal separation from God, in whom alone we can possess the life and happiness for which we are created and for which we long."(The Catechism in a Year, w/Fr. Mike Schmitz)

"When undergoing a trial, call upon Jesus to assist you, and may he be at your right and left together with his holy angels. Pray that the assaults of the devil do not get the upper hand over you and that the weakness of the flesh lead you not astray...For the love of Christ, take up the burden of the holy cross, which will open the gates of the kingdom of heaven for you..." (Magnificat May 2026, Vol 28, No. 3)

Dear Parishioners and Visitors,
Thanks be to God we are finally experiencing the
warmer weather we dreamt about all winter long. This is
indeed the best time to be in Central New York. I want to
write to you this week about two financial initiatives I am
promoting, each respective to the parish to which you
regularly support.
If you are from St. Michael-St. Peter’s, I am looking
to beef up our scholarship fund, which was established at our
150th Anniversary celebration and awards a $1500
scholarship to a student who remains active in the parish after
Confirmation by both attending and volunteering in some
form of ministry. This year we have three applicants, and I
have made the decision to award each of them this award
since each have demonstrated exemplary service to our
parish and authentic devotion to their faith. This year, and
moving forward, I am encouraging people to make
scholarship donations in memory of a loved one who will be
remembered when the scholarships are awarded during our
Baccalaureate Mass, this year on June 28 at 9:30. See the
bulletin or call the office for details on how to donate.
If you are from Our Lady of Hope, you may have
heard me speak of “Operation Close the Gap.” We are about
$20K away from breaking even on our fiscal year and it
would do my heart good to finish the year with a surplus
rather than a deficit. While regular programmatic and office
expenses were actually lower this year—due to great fiscal
prudence—our heating and utility bills doubled and we had
to do $10K in boiler improvements because of failing
computer boards, the blessing and curse of modern heating
systems. So, if you can spare any extra for this year fiscal
year, which ends on June 30, I am appealing to you. If you
decide to donate directly to the new kitchen or sidewalk
before June 30, this will be applied against the deficit while
not raising our Schedule A income, an win-win for the
parish.
So, just a few things to consider. God bless and have
a great week.
Fr. Michael

"So our beloved faithful, our Beloved dead, who have passed into God's presence, they're not separated from us. Well, they are separated from us in time and space, but they're not separated from us when it comes to being part of one body. When it comes to having communion with them, we still are united with them" (The Catechism in a Year w/Fr. Mike Schmitz)

"the Holy Spirit is the Consoler, it is because he is infinite Love...we shall understand that the only thing that can console us is love. Knowledge is precious, but it does not console. Art delights us, but its object is not to console; the only thing that consoles is love. When our heart is torn to pieces, when great bitterness fills our sols, nothing but a divine reality can assuage our pain - love: love that knows how to bind divinely both pain and grief. Love alone possesses the heavenly secret of drawing forth happiness from profound sorrow and pain. (Magnificat May 2026, Vol. 28, No. 3)
