Especially moving evening at Midway Jewish Center in partnership with Ot Chaim, a remarkable project creating a Sefer Torah in memory of the victims of October 7 and those who fell in the Iron Swords War. Their names are engraved on its extraordinary silver Torah case, ensuring that their memories are carried with us each time the Torah is carried forward.

Throughout the evening, members of our community had the sacred opportunity to participate in writing letters in the Torah.

Orna and Ronen Neutra bringomerhome placed a red stone beside the name of their beloved son, Omer Maxim Neutra, z”l, on the Torah case, marking his place among those whose lives and sacrifice will forever be remembered.

As we approach Rosh Hashanah and pray to be written in the Sefer Chaim, the Book of Life, tonight we actually helped write a Sefer Torah, transforming memory into Torah, grief into sacred action, and the names of those we have lost into an enduring part of the story of Am Yisrael.

May their memories be a blessing. May their names be bound forever with the Torah and with the life of our people.

We are so proud to celebrate Sophie Weisz, a member of our Midway Jewish Center family, and the meaningful work she is doing to help carry the memory of the Holocaust forward to a new generation.

As a fourth-generation descendant of Holocaust survivors, Sophie has turned her own family history into education, leadership, and action. During her internship at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County, she helped develop Seeds of Courage, a program that brings Holocaust education together with service and community action.

In this episode of HMTC’s Legacy Chronicles podcast, Sophie reflects on discovering her family’s Holocaust story, leading Holocaust remembrance efforts at her school, learning from survivor testimony, and the responsibility her generation now carries to preserve these stories.

We are proud of Sophie for using her voice, and for reminding all of us that memory comes with responsibility.

The goal of terrorists—and those who celebrate or excuse them—is not only to hurt us. It is to make us afraid. To make us hide who we are.

They clearly do not know us. And they do not know our history.

The best response to hatred is not to become hateful ourselves. It is to refuse to be diminished by it. To live more proudly and more fully as Jews.

So: even if you don’t belong to a synagogue, you belong in a synagogue.

This Shabbat, come be with us. At Midway Jewish Center—and in synagogues everywhere—you will find a community ready to welcome you, a shoulder to lean on, a song to lift you up, and, especially at Midway, probably sheet cake.

Warmth, joy, and sheet-cake.

We will not hide. We will not surrender our joy. And we will not allow anyone to extinguish our light.

The Jewish people are still here.

• Formalizes a public mi shebeirakh (blessing) and a hanukkat habayit ceremony for couples building a Jewish home together
• Welcomes all parents on the bimah during their children's b'nei mitzvah, and affirms that congregations may offer mazel tov and other gestures of inclusion once considered unacceptable
• Affirms that synagogues may hire an intermarried Jewish person for most roles other than clergy
• Affirms full Jewish mourning practices — including sitting shivah and reciting Kaddish — for a non-Jewish parent, spouse, or child, and permits rabbis to officiate at funerals for non-Jewish family members
