“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”
Matthew 6:33
In the context of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus is addressing the natural worries of life—food, clothing, and tomorrow’s uncertainties. He is not dismissing our needs; rather, He is teaching us about priority and trust.
To “seek first” means more than casual interest. It implies an intentional, ongoing pursuit. The kingdom of God must not be something we fit into our schedule when convenient—it must shape our decisions, our values, and our daily walk. For those striving to follow the New Testament pattern, this means putting God’s will above personal ambition, comfort, or worldly success.
Jesus contrasts a life consumed with worry against a life centered on faith. Worry often comes when we place physical needs ahead of spiritual ones. When we reverse that order—when God’s kingdom comes first—we begin to see life differently. Trust replaces anxiety. Contentment replaces striving. This does not mean life becomes free of hardship, but it does mean we are no longer controlled by it.
Seeking the kingdom involves obedience. It includes hearing the Word (Romans 10:17), believing in Christ (John 8:24), repenting of sin (Luke 13:3), confessing faith (Romans 10:9-10), and being baptized for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38). It also means living faithfully day by day, growing in righteousness, and serving others. This is not a one-time act but a lifelong commitment.
Jesus also speaks of seeking “His righteousness.” This reminds us that our standard is not the shifting morality of the world but the unchanging character of God. We pursue righteousness by aligning our lives with His revealed Word. It calls for humility, self-examination, and a willingness to change when we fall short.
The promise attached to this command is powerful: “all these things shall be added to you.” God knows our needs before we ask (Matthew 6:8). When we put Him first, we trust Him to provide what is necessary. This promise is not about wealth or abundance by worldly standards, but about sufficiency. God provides what we need to live and to serve Him.
In a world filled with distractions, competing priorities, and constant pressure, Matthew 6:33 calls us back to simplicity and focus. What comes first in our lives? Is it career, family, comfort—or is it the kingdom of God?
Today is an opportunity to realign our priorities. Examine your heart. Consider your time, your choices, and your thoughts. Are they centered on God’s kingdom? If not, make the adjustment. God’s way is always better, and His promises are sure.
When we truly seek Him first, everything else finds its proper place.
