🦮 Town Touchpoint: Respecting the Yellow Vest

If you’ve lived in Sylmar long enough, you’ve likely seen them: young dogs in yellow or blue vests walking through local stores, parks, or near the Metrolink station.

These aren't just pets out for a stroll; they are students at Guide Dogs of America right here in Sylmar.

When you see a dog in training, the best way to support them is to give them space. Acknowledging the handler but ignoring the dog allows the pup to stay focused on their "Rider’s Rule"—staying connected to their partner and their surroundings.

❤️‍🔥 Having these future service animals training on our streets is a unique part of our community. It’s a quiet but significant contribution to the world, happening right here in Sylmar, CA. ❤️‍🔥

📜 Historical Highlight: The Wildlife Learning Center 🦉

Founded on Yarnell Street by biologists Paul Sieswerda and David Riherd, the Wildlife Learning Center (WLC) was established as a dedicated sanctuary for animals that have no other place to go. While many facilities focus on breeding or public display, the WLC is built on the mission of life-long care for displaced, rescued, and confiscated wildlife.

Over the years, it has evolved into a vital educational resource for the North Valley. Some of the animals were rescued from the illegal pet trade, while others were injured in the wild and deemed non-releasable by wildlife authorities. 🐾

The center is currently home to over 100 animals. Some of the most notable animal residents include:

Lola the Two-Toed Sloth
Sid the Fox
Several species of owls, hawks, and eagles.
And a variety of primates & reptiles: From small monkeys to large tortoises 🦉

The center is open to the public daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. If you are looking for a unique way to celebrate Mother’s Day this Sunday, this is a great local option for a mom who loves animals. It’s a quiet, personal way to see these creatures up close while supporting their ongoing care.

Every visit helps fund the food, medical care, and specialized habitats these animals require. ❤️‍🔥

🐾 Town Touchpoint: A Quiet Gem on Yarnell

If you’re looking for a local outing that’s a bit different from a standard park visit, the Wildlife Learning Center on Yarnell Street is a great community asset.

It’s an accessible, well-maintained sanctuary where you can get an up-close look at animals that have been given a second chance. 🦉

The center is open daily, including Sundays from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. With Mother’s Day coming up, this would be a great spot to take a mom who loves animals. It’s easy to navigate, shaded by the old olive groves, and offers a much more personal experience than the larger city zoos.

❤️‍🔥 Your support for the center directly helps with the food and medical care for these rescued animals. It’s a neat little fact about Sylmar to have such a high-quality educational center right here in our own backyard. ❤️‍🔥

This May, the HoHG Community Connection posts are highlighting The Guide Dogs of America and the Wildlife Learning Center, and our connection point this month is “help.” Look for the full Historical Highlight; Town Touchpoint and Digital Blessings on Facebook and Instagram .

The Sanctuary Perspective (Wildlife Learning Center): Just as the center provides a permanent refuge for animals that cannot help themselves, we are reminded that Grace meets us when we’ve reached the end of our own strength. It’s a picture of the "safety net" God provides when we are displaced or overwhelmed.

The Partner Perspective (Guide Dogs of America): A guide dog is the literal definition of a "very present help." They don’t just offer a one-time fix; they walk the entire path with their partner. It’s a perfect mirror of how the Lord doesn't just give us a map; He walks the trail with us, navigating the obstacles we can’t see.
