Being Lead by the Holy Spirit. (a limited human perspective)
The Holy Spirit is constantly working on our behalf whether we see it or not, whether we believe it or not, and whether we cooperate with Him or not.
He coordinates things for our good, sometimes for years and decades "behind our back," to give us a favorable end, in spite of ourselves. Sometimes we have those "Ah Ha," moments when we see the results of His handiwork, while other times we just are thankful things worked out, not consciously attributing the outcome to His working.
There are moments when He demonstratively steps in to "save us" from ourselves and others! Moments when we might say, "Thank you Jesus!"
Then the work of our cooperation begins at a different level. We can learn to "listen" to the Holy Spirit speaking to our heart and mind. It requires a decision to prayerfully be led by the Holy Spirit, know His Word (the Bible) as the guide to learning if it is His voice we are hearing (verses something else), sharpen our listening skills to sense His promptings, and prayerfully conclude what He is saying and what it means. We make mistakes in our "hearing," "deciding," "interpreting," and the choice of our actions as a result. But through time and our willingness to learn, He can help sharpen our sensitivity to HIs voice and promptings.
And finally (from a limited human point of view), make ongoing decisions to work on my understanding (image of the world and self from God's point of view), behavior (endeavoring to live a holy life), sensitivity (turning off the distractions - world events, personal challenges, other's opinions), and make moment by moment decisions in my life, based on God's Word, His Spirit speaking to my heart, to sharpen my being "led by the Holy Spirit."
We will make mistakes, but His forgiveness and willingness to help us every step of the way, should be a comfort to us of His love and desire toward us, to help us in our endeavors to become more "Christlike," something we will never fully achieve until eternity, but should constantly strive for to bring Him glory!
