Scenes from Parish Life: A recent workday after service, and Charlene and I singing at our biweekly service at Copper Ridge in Sykesville, a memory care facility that offers assisted living facilities and other amenities. Well worth checking them out.

IT’S A SMALL, SMALL WORLD…

I got a text from someone I know when I arrived home yesterday, asking me to help her solve a mystery.

When I called, she told me this story: Her mother lives in Ellicott City and comes to our Thrift Shop often as it is her favorite. She found a canvas-printed photo of donkeys grazing on a farm, so she bought it for her daughter who breeds and rescues donkeys and horses.

When my friend received the photo for Mother's Day, she immediately knew that it was a picture of her farm and her donkeys. She turned it over and found this written on the back: "September 2024, Arden Pines Farm".

The fascinating part is that another friend and I visited that same farm in September of 2024. I took many photographs, had a few transferred to canvas print, and did a few sketches and paintings from other images. When I moved last year, I donated the canvas print to St. Barnabas’ Thrift Shop.

Her mother visits the shop all the time, but she only saw that picture last Saturday. She sent it to her daughter, who, since 2024, has moved her family and her animals to West Virginia. She wasn't able to keep all her animals, and she was very happy to see a picture of them again.

When we spoke about it, we were thrilled that the picture found its way to her, but I was really struck by how small the world really is and how connected we all are. We were able to catch up and I'll be visiting her new farm soon.

Life sure can be fun sometimes! —

Scenes from parish life — the Stone Church Pickers played this afternoon at a benefit concert for E.S.C.A.P.E. Ministries, which was held at Faith Lutheran Church in Eldersburg. Janet Boyd, Executive Director of E.S.C.A.P.E. , addressed the attendees and a free will offering was taken up. In other news, our thrift shop is open for sales again next Saturday, and Fr. Tim *finally* won the famous Cheese Ball and Crackers prize for having the closest guess of the total amount in the “Change to Make Change” jar at the front of the church. The amount of $536 will be split between two local charities.

ST. BARNABAS FOCUSES ON COMMUNITY SUPPORT

St. Barnabas began its support of the “Night by Night Shelter” in Westminster during the Covid pandemic. Typically, we have assisted shelter residents by providing them with snacks, paper products and hygiene goods donated by parishioners.

Several years ago, a small group at church began making bag lunches for the shelter every month. The lunches consist of a sandwich, chips, cookies, apple sauce, and a bottle of water. Currently, we provide the shelter with 60 lunches per month.
Additionally, St. Barnabas participates in the E.S.C.A.P.E. Ministries program that gives weekly bagged lunches to people in need in the Sykesville/Eldersburg area. Each of the 16 churches supporting the program provides lunches four times per year, making 48 bags each time.

The 7-8 volunteers from St. Barnabas make the lunches in the parish hall and then deliver them to St. Paul's Methodist Church in Sykesville for distribution. This group of people not only supports an important outreach program, but they look at their time together as an excellent opportunity for fellowship.

St. Barnabas has supported the Salvation Army’s Feedmore Van program for many years, handing out meals and clothing to the homeless in Baltimore City. Currently, the church works with the van twice a month, serving approx 50-70 meals per visit. The van operates six nights per week, with support from other churches and organizations.

A big shout out and thanks for their help to our volunteers: Pat Lochran, Charlene and Steve Toth, Linda and Wayne Pugh, Noah Pugh, Esther Mercer, Jeanette Ravendhran, Bonnie Briscoe, Lisa Thomas and Ava Walczak.

Scenes from parish life (it’s been a while)… KC, our dedicated thrift shop volunteer, cleared the path from the parking lot to the parish hall after the recent snowstorm. She is one of the unsung heroes of St. Barnabas. And we all feasted at a memorable Shrove Tuesday potluck supper before belts were tightened for Lent. God is good, all the time.
