Tournament Format

At Saturday's event, teams of three will compete for the gold, silver, and bronze. Open play in the afternoon will be used to determine seeding for a single elimination bracket beginning around 5 pm. Come early and play often to boost your seed!

In an attempt to make the seeding process more fair, Bakerball proposes to introduce "pool play" for the open portion of this year's competition. This format is used in major sports competitions to create more balanced match-ups in the knock-out round. Here is what we propose: when teams arrive, they enroll in one of two pools (A and B). During open play in the afternoon, teams are encouraged (but not required) to play teams within their group. Teams are then awarded 2 points for a win against another team within the same pool, but only 1 point for a win against a team from the other pool. Point totals are then be used to determine seeding for match-ups against the other pool in the knock-out round.

As Bakerball is a democratic sport, we welcome questions, comments, or suggestions on this proposal.

Bakerball Rule Summary #5: And-One

Are we finished with the new rules yet? No. Never. The rule "And-One" originated as a substitute for the previously enforced, always unpredictable, but ultimately controversial concept of "Mini Games". The opportunity centers on 2 (previously 4) bases positioned at 45 degree angles to the backboard of the Basketball goal, out in the grass, at deep-three range. If you are able to shoot an Oskie shot (see rule summary #3) with a foot on one of these bases and make that shot, you are awarded -- in addition to winning the point -- a chance at one shot from the free-throw line for a potential additional point. After catching the Bakerball during the Oskie shot, you are allowed two steps to reach the base (by NBA standards). It is also highly satisfying to shout "And-One!" before/while/after making such a shot. The free-throw shot is a dead-ball play. Should the bonus free throw occur on "game point" and be made, the opposing team themselves will get one free-throw shot for the opportunity to "take back" the otherwise game winning point.

Bakerball Rule Summary #4: The Soccer Goal

OK...but what's that Soccer goal for? I thought you'd never ask! The Soccer goal stands behind the server side of the Bakerball court so the serving team is always playing defense on the goal, while the receiving team can shoot at the goal for the opportunity to score a point even when not serving. Should you successfully kick (or head) the Bakerball into the Soccer goal from the receiving side at any point during the course of play not only are you awarded one point but your opponent (the serving side) also LOSES a point. We call this the "plus one/ minus one". However, the team defending the Soccer goal (the serving side) may play goalie (and use their hands) to block your shot as long as they are standing (with both feet established) in the grassy area behind the court (note that you cannot play goalie/use your hands either on the court or to either side of it). A successful Soccer goal only results in a side-out if the ball first landed in the court before proceeding to the goal. A ball kicked (or headed) over (or around) the court and into the Soccer goal still results in the "plus one/ minus one" but does NOT result in a side-out. Got it?

Bakerball Rule Summary #3: Oskie

But what if you are also pretty good at shooting a basketball- shouldn't there be a rule in Bakerball for you? Yes. Yes, there should. That's why we invented the "Oskie" shot. Here's how it works. If the opposing team plays the ball to your side and that ball is in play (i.e. bounces on the court) but the second bounce lands off the court (i.e. in the grass), then you may call "Oskie", grab the ball (yes, with your hands), and shoot at the basket. In addition to calling "Oskie" before grabbing the ball, you must also establish at least one foot off the court (in the grass) and cannot be touching the court with either foot. You must then shoot the ball immediately. To enforce this, the opposing team may begin counting "One Oskie, Two Oskie, Three Oskie, Errrrrrrrrrrrr". You have to shoot before "errrrrrrrrrrr". Make the shot and you win the point. But remember, anytime -- even after an Oskie shot -- that the ball bounces off the Basketball apparatus (see rule #2), the bounces reset (to 2), so KEEP PLAYING!
