I think this is my favorite picture of my dad, Robert Lane. Many members of this page have said how kind and nice he was. I think this picture shows that. Sadly, my dad passed away on August 23rd. He passed peacefully. There will be a memorial service on September 21st at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Swiftwater, PA at 11 am. Below is is his obituary that will appear soon in the Pocono Record. I would appreciate cards of condolence be sent to his wife of 13 years, Caroline Lebar, 1170 West Main St, Stroudsburg, PA 18360.
Robert A. Lane of Stroudsburg, PA passed away on August 23, 2024 at Pleasant Valley Manor. Robert was born December 22, 1927 to Walter and Beatrice Lane in Pen Argyl, Pennsylvania. He was predeceased by his first wife of 50 years, Phyllis Lane.
He is survived by his daughter Kandace and son-in-law Wayne Wellman; granddaughter Heather and husband David Jackson and their children Sawyer and Henley; grandson Robert Wellman and his children, Weston and Kelina. He is also survived by his second wife, Caroline Lebar whom he married in 2001 and her children, Greg, John and Mary Frances. His family will be eternally grateful for the love and happiness she and her family provided him in his final years.
Robert graduated from Pen Argyl High School, Pen Argyl, PA. He then enlisted in the US Army in March of 1946 where he was trained as a radio operator. Robert served in the army from March of 1946 to August of 1947. He had been trained as a radio operator but upon landing in Korea was immediately commandeered to play in the Army band.
After the army Robert attended George Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee where he graduated with a degree in music education. Robert married his first wife Phyllis Brescacin, in August of 1949 and began his first teaching job in Hopkinsville, Kentucky where their daughter was born. In 1958, Robert and family moved back to Pennsylvania to head up the music program at the newly consolidated Pocono Mountain School District. Robert was hired to establish the music program of the Pocono Mountain School District when several schools were consolidated to form the district in 1960. Under his guidance, music classes and lessons began and marching and concert bands were formed. Besides teaching, he built sets and supervised sound and lighting for the many musicals and plays that were performed over the years, directed concert, marching and pit bands, was involved with both the tennis and golf teams, and was announcer for many football and basketball games. The lyrics for the Pocono Mountain Alma Mater were written by him. Robert retired from Pocono Mountain in 1989 after 32 years of service to the district.
Robert was a longtime member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ where he served as choir director, Sunday School superintendent and teacher, committee member, overseer of the church cemetery and organizer of the church’s annual blueberry festival for many years. Robert was an avid fisherman, hunter, carpenter, golfer and tennis player.
A memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Swiftwate,PA on September 21, 2024 at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to St. Paul’s UCC, PO Box 161, Swiftwater, PA 18370.
