Swarthmore Kehilah: Jewish Community

Swarthmore Kehilah: Jewish Community We do food, we do services, we do funny, we do Jewish. A space for people of all backgrounds and traditions to explore Jewish community and ritual together.

Jewish life at Swarthmore is both vibrant and diverse and offers all Jews the opportunity to engage with their tradition in a meaningful way. The community strives to create religious, social justice, cultural, musical, intellectual, and social avenues through which Jewish students are able to connect with their Judaism and come together in community. We invite anyone interested in Jewish life at

Swarthmore to visit programs sponsored by Swat Kehilah and get a real taste of the vibrant Jewish community. Kehilah, Swarthmore's Jewish student organization, is LGBTQ+-affirming. All are welcome.

We are excited to announce that it is time to apply for 2020-21 Kehilah Board! Sophomores, juniors, and seniors are eligible to serve as board members– incoming first years will have a chance to run for board in the spring.

Positions are typically year-long, although there is more flexibility this year due to the pandemic making long-term planning more difficult. Please note that due to Swarthmore College policy, you must be enrolled at Swat in order to serve on board.

If you're interested in being on Board, please complete this form by Sunday, August 30. Elections will be held the week of the 31st. Please reach out with any questions or concerns.

Hello Kehilah community and incoming students!

Because of the expected restrictions limiting the size of in person campus gatherings, together with the fact that not all of us will be on the campus during the fall semester, Kehilah, Swarthmore's Jewish student group, is continuing and expanding online community building programming to help welcome first years and transfer students to Swarthmore!

If you are a first year or transfer student (or just new to Kehilah!) interested in learning more about Kehilah, please fill out this form: https://forms.gle/JdoLQA2YZBpRz4fF8

If you are a returning student interested in helping the incoming students feel more integrated in our community despite the hurdles that this semester is presenting, please fill out the following form: https://forms.gle/s17CgVvQjXWSJ1zu8

We look forward to hearing from you!

Kehilah community,

The Talmud says this of accountability: ”Anyone who had the capability to effectively protest the sinful conduct of the members of his household and did not protest, they themselves are held responsible for the sins of the members of their household… If they are in a position to protest the sinful conduct of the people of their town and fail to do so, they are held responsible for the sins of the people of his town. If they are in a position to protest the sinful conduct of the whole world and fail to do so, they are held responsible for the sins of the whole world."

Part of the work that we need to be doing is seeking out, listening to, and amplifying Black voices. Attached is a non-comprehensive and ever-growing list of articles and think pieces written by Black Jews, as well as some Jewish-specific resources that speak to how we as Jews can work towards dismantling racism and creating a more just world.

Sending love,

Kehilah board
