The meeting of the Bourbon Nerds convened at Daint’s this weekend. A lineup ranging from toasted rye and barrel proof Kentucky heat to old Scotch that tastes like somebody’s wealthy grandfather’s library.

No real rules. No tasting notes written on clipboards. Just a table full of dangerous opinions and the occasional “hold on… go back to that one.”

Maine spring doesn’t arrive. It negotiates.

First warm evening of the year. Warm enough to mean it. We took it to the beach with a pour of Very Small Batch — a wheated Kentucky straight bourbon out of Paradise, Kentucky. Literally. That’s the town. A 4,000-acre farm on limestone-filtered water, three pot stills, staves air-seasoned for two years before a drop touches them.

100 proof. Blended from 3 to 5 barrels per batch. Never sourced. The wheat does what wheat does — softens the edges, lets the caramel and vanilla come through without rye heat getting in the way. Something like peach and baking spice on the back end. Smooth enough to drink while watching the last light leave the water. Interesting enough to hold your attention once it’s gone.

Good bourbon for a night that earned itself.

No heat. No bite. Nothing that makes you wince and question your choices. Just clean, smooth, and genuinely drinkable — straight up or in a martini that might ruin you for lesser vodkas forever. Small batch out of Vail, Colorado, made in honor of the 10th Mountain Division soldiers. The kind of spirit that earns its shelf space.
