Daily Devotional — Preparing To Be Positioned
"Remember me when things go well for you, and please do me a favor. Mention me to Pharaoh, and get me out of this prison... Nevertheless, the chief cupbearer didn't remember Joseph. He forgot all about him." Genesis 40:14;23 GWT
Joseph was in prison for years suffering for a crime he didn't commit. We are not given an exact timeline but I estimate it to be at least 3 years or more based upon my study of Genesis 40. After quite some time, possibly a year or more, an opportunity arose that looked like justice was about to happen and victory would soon follow.
Except it didn't.
Two more years of suffering went by leaving, Joseph—and us as readers—to ask the dreaded question: why? Why couldn't Joseph have been let out of prison in that opportunity? He had already suffered an injustice just for being in there. The whole thing is completely unfair!
Joseph thought that if Pharoah would hear how he interpreted two different men's dreams and they both came true, Pharoah would let him out of prison for it. Perhaps Joseph thought he might get a chance to serve among the King's Court of wise men and magicians (see 41:8), instead of enslaved in the prison.
God had better—way better.
The Lord had been preparing Joseph his entire life for the position as the right-hand man of the king over Egypt. In this position, Joseph would be used by the Lord to do more than interpret dreams. He would help save nations during a famine unlike anything we have ever seen.
Had God allowed Joseph to settle among the wise men of the Court, he never would have taken his place as second in command. God didn't allow Joseph to shortchange his life and miss out on the position of his lifetime.
We may not always understand why things have to play out the way that they do and cause seeming unjust suffering. But God never allows something He won't make good out of. We can trust Him that those grueling years in prison shaped Joseph into all that we know him to be, and it is written down in the word of God. It is solid!
Joseph was a man of integrity. He knew how to submit to God in every area of his life and God calls us to do the same thing. If you only knew how your story was going to play out and what great blessings God has in store for your life, you would be very quick in that submission.
God doesn't want you surrendering for things. He wants you surrendered to Him and then He will do great things.
The sooner you learn this, the better life becomes for you. Weeping may last for a night but joy comes in the morning.
God is faithful! He will never allow something without a purpose for it. Even an unjust and cruel situation will birth out the greatest blessings of your life. Just ask Joseph!
Be blessed! -Servant Misty
