The WCA AfricaNOW initiative seeks to provide the funds needed for the development of print and digital resources in the prominent languages of the African UMC Annual Conferences (English, French, Portuguese), to provide convenors for informational networking gatherings in the various annual conferences, to resource informed advocacy supporting those leaders who initiate processes of departure from the UMC for their congregation(s), district(s), annual conference(s), or region, and, as may be needed, supplemental transitional funding for congregations, districts, or conferences moving from the dependency dynamics of the UMC into one of the Provisional Annual Conferences of the Global Methodist Church in Africa.

“If you read the WCA Outlook you are aware that in the past couple of years over 25% of United Methodist congregations in the USA have left the denomination. Many others, however, decided to suspend such a disruptive decision to see if it would be warranted. After all, they were told by their District Superintendents, Bishops, and, in many cases, their pastors, that bad actors were stoking the fires of discontent. United Methodism is a big ten, they were assured. Pay attention to the decisions of the General Conference in Charlotte, they were told, before making any hasty decisions. Predictably, because pastors, District Superintendents, and Bishops are thought to be trustworthy and truthful, most congregations in the USA and whole annual conferences in places like Africa chose to wait and see.”

While much of the attention since General Conference has been given to the decisions the body made regarding human sexuality, it's important to note that with the passage of 20847-CB-R9999
"RIGHTS AND ACCESS TO REPRODUCTIVE HEALTHCARE";

The United Methodist Church:

"...upholds a person’s right to an abortion after informed consideration..." .

Declares that... "State and federal laws and regulations prohibiting abortion violate a person’s right to the full range of reproductive health care, and, potentially, life."

And declares that "United Methodists and their churches will support a person’s right to reproductive health care, including abortion, through personal prayer, letter writing campaigns to their legislators and, when necessary, peaceful protest."

Dear Friends,
The legislative work of the United Methodist General Conference is continuing, but some of the items we have been following, and about which we have been concerned for several years, have passed:

1) Removal of the prohibition against self-avowed practicing homosexual clergy has passed General Conference will become effective May 4. This is a completed action, and does not need any additional ratification.

2) Removal of penalties for the performance of same-gender weddings has passed General Conference, this is a completed action, without need for additional ratification. Additionally removal of the actual prohibition is also expected to pass, perhaps as soon as today.

3) Removal of the language from the Social Principles identifying homosexual behavior as incompatible with Christian living has passed committee, and will go before the full General Conference, and is expected to pass, perhaps as soon as today.

4) All petitions offering an extension to disaffiliation which came before committee have been voted down by large margins. One effort to bring disaffiliation back before the body today failed.

While continued efforts may be made by some delegates to resurrect a plan for disaffiliation, it seems that that sense of the body is opposition to such a step.

We do remind you that our West Virginia WCA Spring Conference with Rob Renfore will be looking at these matters in greater depth, and we invite you to register today for that conference: https://forms.gle/6mLNDWqqw9TvmMYHA
