Dear Friends,
The legislative work of the United Methodist General Conference is continuing, but some of the items we have been following, and about which we have been concerned for several years, have passed:
1) Removal of the prohibition against self-avowed practicing homosexual clergy has passed General Conference will become effective May 4. This is a completed action, and does not need any additional ratification.
2) Removal of penalties for the performance of same-gender weddings has passed General Conference, this is a completed action, without need for additional ratification. Additionally removal of the actual prohibition is also expected to pass, perhaps as soon as today.
3) Removal of the language from the Social Principles identifying homosexual behavior as incompatible with Christian living has passed committee, and will go before the full General Conference, and is expected to pass, perhaps as soon as today.
4) All petitions offering an extension to disaffiliation which came before committee have been voted down by large margins. One effort to bring disaffiliation back before the body today failed.
While continued efforts may be made by some delegates to resurrect a plan for disaffiliation, it seems that that sense of the body is opposition to such a step.
We do remind you that our West Virginia WCA Spring Conference with Rob Renfore will be looking at these matters in greater depth, and we invite you to register today for that conference: https://forms.gle/6mLNDWqqw9TvmMYHA
