Sussex United Methodist Church

Sussex United Methodist Church Our Mission: to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the World! Our congregation includes people of all ages, from all walks of life.

We are excited to be part of a United Methodist connection that provides help and hope to people all over the globe. For more information about the United Methodist Church, check out www.umc.org. That connection is evident in our support worldwide United Methodist ministries such as the "No More Malaria" campaign, and in our support and work for "A Future With Hope," the statewide United Methodist

relief effort for people affected by Superstorm Sandy. We also help raise funds for worldwide emergency aid, through the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) (www.umcor.org). Right here in Sussex County we actively reach out to serve others through such ministries as assistance with the Sussex Help Center, the Skylands Outreach Depot, our Thanksgiving Basket and Christmas Gift Ministry, as well as our Shoebox Ministry (through which we gather gifts for college students members of the armed forces, and others living far from home). Our church thoroughly enjoys singing, and we are led by a great chancel choir, under the leadership of choir director Sharon Craig. Together, we have a lot of fun, whether serving a turkey dinner, organizing huge barn and clothing sales, or worshiping in our beautiful outdoor lakeside chapel. Join us for fellowship or for one of our many ministries and projects!

QUIET MEDITATION
“Our feeble minds forget the tenderness of the Creator who formed us freely, out of pure love and delight.” ~Jessica Coblentz

*CALL TO WORSHIP
One: Come gather together here in the presence of Christ, who is our friend and healer.
All: We have entered here, and in our worship together, we yearn for hope and comfort.
One: Let us reach to the heart of Jesus, who is our life.
All: We encounter our Lord, who makes us whole.
One: Here we are, welcome and loved and cherished.
All: Here we are the people of God. Let us rejoice and give God praise. Amen.

*HYMN: “Are Ye Able” (UMH #530)

OPENING PRAYER (Please be seated, as we pray together)
God of glory, fill this, your church, with the power that flows from the resurrection of your Son, Jesus:
Amidst the sound and fury of the sinful world, may we signal the beginning of a renewed humanity, risen to new life with Christ. Amen.

CHILDREN’S TIME & SINGING: “He’s Got the Whole World”

PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Leader: Who do we say Jesus is? He is the judge of all -- but also the one who was judged. He knew no sin, yet he took on the powers of sin for our sake. Let us thank God that through his loving sacrifice we are redeemed and our sins are forgiven. Amen. All: Amen.

CHOIR ANTHEM: “Pass It On”

THE APOSTLE’S CREED (UMH #881)

*HYMN: “The Summons” (TFWS #2130)

SCRIPTURE READING Please listen for a word from God, as we read from the Holy Scriptures.

The Epistle to the Romans, Chapter 5, Verse 6-11:
Brothers and sisters: Christ, while we were still helpless, yet died at the appointed time for the ungodly. Indeed, only with difficulty does one die for a just person, though perhaps for a good person one might even find courage to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us. How much more then, since we are now justified by his blood, will we be saved through him from the wrath. Indeed, if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, how much more, once reconciled, will we be saved by his life. Not only that, but we also boast of God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

*HYMN: “Glory Be to the Father” (UMH #70)
(please remain standing for the reading of the Gospel)

*GOSPEL READING Our Gospel lesson is from The Gospel According to Saint Matthew, Chapter 9, verse 36-Chapter 10, verse 8:
At the sight of the crowds, Jesus’ heart was moved with pity for them because they were troubled and abandoned, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.”
Then he summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits to drive them out and to cure every disease and every illness. The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon called Peter, and his brother Andrew; James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James, the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddeus; Simon from Cana, and Judas Iscariot who betrayed him.
Jesus sent out these twelve after instructing them thus, “Do not go into pagan territory or enter a Samaritan town. Go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, make this proclamation: ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, drive out demons. Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.”
One: This is the Word of the LORD.
All: Thanks be to God! Amen.

SERMON: Rev. Dr. Timothy Nicinski

QUIET MEDITATION
“Today’s readings… demand that we be uncompromising in our commitment.” ~Michael Casey

CALL TO WORSHIP (Please stand, as you are able)
One: Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings; ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
All: Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name. Let us worship the Lord in holy splendor.
One: The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders.
All: The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty. The voice of the Lord causes all in his temple to say “Glory!” Come, let us worship the Lord and lift our voices in praise! Amen.

*HYMN: “Are Ye Able” (UMH #530)

OPENING PRAYER
O Lord Jesus Christ, you prayed for your disciples that they might be one, even as you are one with the Father; draw us to yourself that in common love and obedience to you we may be united to one another, in the fellowship of the one Spirit, that the world may believe that you are Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Amen

RESPONSIVE READING Psalm 16: 1-2, 5, 7-10:
Keep me, O God, for in you I take refuge;
I say to the Lord, “My Lord are you.”
O Lord, my allotted portion and my cup,
you it is who hold fast my lot.
I bless the Lord who counsels me;
even in the night my heart exhorts me.
I set the Lord ever before me;
with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed.
Therefore, my heart is glad and my soul rejoices,
my body, too, abides in confidence;
Because you will not abandon my soul to the nether world, nor will you suffer your faithful one to undergo corruption.

SCRIPTURE READING
The First Book of Kings, Chapter 19, verses 19-21:
Elijah set out, and came upon Elisha, son of Shaphat, as he was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen; he was following the twelfth. Elijah went over to him and threw his cloak over him. Elisha left the oxen, ran after Elijah, and said, “Please, let me kiss my father and mother goodbye, and I will follow you.” Elijah answered, “Go back! Have I done anything to you?” Elisha left him and, taking the yoke of oxen, slaughtered them; he used the plowing equipment for fuel to boil their flesh, and gave it to his people to eat. Then he left and followed Elijah as his attendant.

*Please stand as you are able as we sing together the
“Gloria Patri”:
Glory be to the Father
and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen. Amen.

*GOSPEL READING
The Gospel of Saint Matthew, Chapter 5, verses 33-37:
Jesus said to his disciples: “You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, Do not take a false oath, but make good to the Lord all that you vow. But I say to you, do not swear at all; not by heaven, for it is God’s throne; nor by the earth, for it is his footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Do not swear by your head, for you cannot make a single hair white or black. Let your ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No’ mean ‘No.’ Anything more is from the Evil One.”

One: This is the word of the Lord.
All: Thanks be to God! Amen.

SERMON: Rev. Dr. Timothy Nicinski

SCRIPTURE READING Please listen for a word from God, as we read from the Holy Scriptures.
A reading from the First Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians 10:16-17
Brothers and sisters: The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Because the loaf of bread is one, we, though many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf.

*HYMN: “Glory Be to the Father” (UMH #70)
(please remain standing for the reading of the Gospel)

*GOSPEL READING Our Gospel lesson is from The Gospel According to John, Chapter 6, verses 51-58:
Jesus said to the Jewish crowds: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.”
The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever.”

One: This is the Word of the LORD.
All: Thanks be to God! Amen.
