There's an expression in the sport of soccer: "going for glory." In short, it means to score some kind of stupendous, spectacular goal, usually leading to your teammates hoisting you on their shoulders and carrying you off the field.

In other sports, "glory" means something similar: catching the winning touchdown, hitting a grand slam, getting a hole in one. Think big, dramatic, and spectacular.

But in today's Gospel, Jesus offers us a different image of glory: doing what you have been asked to do. If we apply this to sports, our definition of glorious plays expands, including everything from a basic block in football to a well-executed bounce pass in basketball.

This is important for us to remember in our spiritual lives. Giving God glory doesn't necessarily mean accomplishing dramatic feats. In fact, focusing on grandiose achievements can actually distract us from seeking true glory: fidelity to God in every moment of the day.

So, St. Anthony, Lake Nebagamon family, let's glorify God today. First by worshiping him at Mass, and then by being faithful to him throughout the rest of the day.

When you think about it, Jesus' final instructions are pretty daunting: carry on the mission of God incarnate; the mission of one who can walk on water, command the seas, heal the sick, drive out demons, and who literally just rose from the dead.

You and I are not Jesus. And thus, being asked to carry forth Christ's mission of proclaiming the good news can seem impossible, especially when we consider where it led him: to the cross.

But the last part of today's reading is the kicker. Because Jesus doesn't send us out alone. In fact, he tells us that he will be with us "to the end of the age." And he is: through the sacraments, prayer, and community of the Church.

Yes, St. Anthony, Lake Nebagamon family, Jesus asks big things of us. But he asks us precisely because he is with us; a presence that makes all the difference. So as we celebrate the Ascension, let's prayerfully consider how we can respond to the call to be missionary disciples.

In the month of May, we're talking a lot about flowers. Believe it or not, they feature strongly in Sacred Scripture! Take a look:

-Jesus uses the lilies growing in the field as an example of how God takes care of creation (Matthew 6:28-29)
-The "rose of Sharon" mentioned in the Song of Songs represents beauty and desirability, and gives us a sense of the longing with which God looks at his people (Song of Songs 2:1)
-Almond blossoms sprout on Aaron's staff as a sign of God's favor and selection (Numbers 17:8)
-Hyssop symbolizes the purification we experience when we repent before God and are restored by his love (Psalm 51:9)
-And the prophet Isaiah points to the flower of the field as a symbol of human frailty and transience, and the need to be rooted in God.

Flowers may be small and seemingly insignificant, but God chooses to refer to them in his Word. After all, he made them! And their beauty, purity, and, yes, fragility, can help us reflect upon our own lives and our need for God. Let's hope that, through his goodness, our love of Scripture continues to grow here at St. Anthony, Lake Nebagamon.

On Sunday, we heard the Gospel reading that inspired Thomas Tallis' "If Ye Love Me," arguably the most beautiful hymn of the English language. But who was Thomas Tallis? Watch this week's video to find out--and make sure to tell Fr. Andrew what you learn!

If there's one apostle who it'd be easy to forget, it's St. Matthias. First, he became an apostle only after Jesus's ascension, selected by lot to replace Judas Iscariot.

But another element of St. Matthias's relative obscurity is the similarity of his name to a much better known apostle: St. Matthew; dramatic convert, convener of sinners and tax collectors, and gospel author extraordinaire. Talk about getting overshadowed!

But today, on St. Matthias's feast day, it's worth getting familiar with him. For one, his selection restored the number of apostles to 12, symbolically underscoring that the Church is the New Israel, as there were 12 tribes of Israel. Second, he was eligible only because he had witnessed the resurrected Jesus, underscoring that Christianity is rooted in real events, not mere ideas. Finally, Matthias's selection demonstrates that appointment to apostolic office is a process that goes through, not around, Church authorities.

In short, St. Matthias is a great witness to the historical and hierarchical dimensions of the Catholic Church and our Christian faith. And today, on his feast day, let's ask for him to bless all of us at St. Anthony.

As far as divine providence goes, there are no coincidences. So it’s especially significant that in 1917, Mary appeared near a Portuguese village with a notable connection to Islam: Fatima.

"Fatima" was the name of the daughter of Islam's founder, Muhammad. Given Islam's reverence for Mary, some Catholic scholars have even suggested that this fascinating parallel could serve as an opportunity for dialogue between Christians and Muslims. Here's what Archbishop Fulton Sheen said on the topic:

"Since nothing ever happens out of heaven except with a finesse of all details, I believe that the Blessed Virgin chose to be known as 'Our Lady of Fátima' as a pledge and a sign of hope to the Moslem people, and as an assurance that they, who show her so much respect, will one day accept her Divine Son, too.”

Here at St. Anthony, let's continue to pray for fruitful dialogue between Catholics and Muslims, and that all people will come to know Jesus Christ as their savior.

He didn’t go where it was easy.
He went where no one else would.

St. Damien of Molokai gave his life to those the world had abandoned—building homes, caring for the sick, and restoring dignity to the forgotten.

He didn’t just serve them.
He became one of them.

His life reminds us that mission is not about distance—it’s about love that stays, even when it costs everything.

Today, we are called to see Christ in the most overlooked and to love without hesitation.

Today we mark one year of Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate.

In his first year as the Holy Father, he has reminded the Church that we are called to go forth—to proclaim the Gospel and serve the world.

But this mission did not begin in Rome.
For 14 years in Peru, he lived as a missionary—walking with communities, proclaiming Christ, and witnessing to the Gospel in daily life.

He does not just send missionaries.
He has been one.
