Seeking Guidance: The First Step

By forsaking the worldly way, believers choose a narrow path (Matthew 7:13). However, we’re not meant to wander blindly on it. The Holy Spirit is our guide. But have you ever struggled to discern His divine guidance?

Seeking God’s direction involves a pattern that begins with cleansing—in other words, the first place to look is at ourselves. Ask, “Father, do You see anything in my life that might interfere with my understanding what You are saying?” Sin hinders the process: It clouds our judgment and how we experience the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Bible teaches that God cleanses us from unrighteousness when we confess our sins (1 John 1:9). It also contains a clear warning for those who refuse to relinquish a wrong habit or attitude—the Lord doesn’t heed their cries (Psalm 66:18). But even when mistakes are made, God will never forsake those who call Him Father (Hebrews 13:5).

Cleansing is woven into the process of gaining divine guidance. The Holy Spirit brings sin to our attention and equips us to deal with it. So on the way to receiving His clear direction, we may revisit this first step of cleansing often. The result is, we can continually experience a time of rich spiritual growth and renewal.

Seeking Guidance: The Pattern

When we truly believe God's way is best and let go of our own plans, we position ourselves to hear His voice.

We saw there’s a pattern to seeking God’s guidance, and the first step—cleansing—is important throughout the entire process. Interestingly, all but one of the remaining steps have no particular order and can actually fit together in many ways.

After we’ve asked for cleansing, we must surrender—this is not an admission of weakness but, rather, an expression of humility and trust. The Lord is looking for commitment to follow Him no matter what. Therefore, surrender must precede even our prayers for guidance. 1 John 5:14-15 says that the Lord hears and grants our petitions when we ask according to His will.

God often guides believers to an answer through His Word (Psalm 119:105). Our reading might take us to a passage that deals with our specific situation, or it might reveal a principle that applies. God can also speak a clear message directly to a person’s heart. The key is to believe that the Lord is going to guide you—and then to live out that faith (Mark 11:24).

The process of seeking guidance is often slow. We are wise to be patient, because running ahead or manipulating circumstances can be a costly mistake. Our omniscient, sovereign God “acts in behalf of the one who waits for Him” (Isaiah 64:4). Those who seek direction will receive—that’s a promise (Matthew 7:7-8).

Our Appointment

Jesus paid the penalty for sin, making it possible for us to live forever with our Father in heaven.

The moment we were born, a countdown began on our life. Every tick of the clock brings us one step closer to meeting the Lord face-to-face. Each of us will stand before Him as we approach our eternal destination.

The only way to gain eternal life is through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ (1 John 5:11-12). Truly, our sin has separated us from the Father. But God’s Son provided the solution to this universal problem: Christ lived a perfect life and then died on the cross at Calvary to atone for the countless sins of mankind (Romans 6:23). After three days, He rose from the grave, defeating death and evil. By trusting in what He did on our behalf, we no longer have to live apart from God.

To receive this amazing gift, we must simply believe in the Lord Jesus and what He did. As a result, we become new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17), are adopted as God’s children (Ephesians 1:5), and enter into a never-ending personal relationship with our heavenly Father.

Do you have confidence about where you will spend eternity? You may assume you have time to figure out this important issue, but don’t wait another minute to settle the matter, because later may never come. Repent of your sin today and follow Jesus.

Praying on Our Knees

Only God can soften a heart and open a mind—let's pray and watch Him work.

Have you ever been in a situation where people reacted negatively towards you? Maybe at this very moment you’re dealing with a difficult home life, work relationship, or situation at school.

The way to handle troubles is on our knees before the Lord. The heavenly Father waits for us to approach His throne through prayer so we can gain His divine perspective and receive instruction on how to proceed. But in our prayer time, a battle often takes place between what we want (avoiding conflict) and what the Lord has planned for us (to move through it in faith).

When we humbly seek the Lord through prayer, we invite Him to take the lead in our situation and to accomplish His plan. Scripture promises that He is our refuge, strength, and help (Psalm 46:1). He may direct us in ways we find surprising, but we can trust they will be for our good and His glory.

Praying on our knees is a gesture of humility, which reminds us God is the Master and we’re His servants. In fact, He can also see a humble attitude in those who cannot kneel. He knows all things, whereas our perspective is narrow. What’s more, He is all-powerful. He can soften hard hearts and open closed minds. We cannot. Let’s make prayer a regular part of our day and watch what God does, in both our life and the lives of those around us.

Learning in Troubled Waters

Hardship produces spiritual growth when we respond with a committed, teachable, and surrendered heart.

God promises that when we face challenging times, He will be with us. He wants to be our teacher and guide, but we must position ourselves to respond to Him. We need to ...

- Have a longing to follow God’s way. Scripture compares such yearning to a deer panting for water (Psalm 42:1). The same should be true of us each time we wait for God’s direction instead of acting on our own.

- Be willing to be taught by the Lord. When we look to Him for guidance, He will transform our adversities into times of learning. Such was the case with Hannah as she pleaded for a child (1 Samuel 1:1-28; 1 Samuel 2:1-10). It was also true for Mary and Martha when their brother Lazarus died (John 11:17-27). We need willing spirits if we are to learn what God wants to teach us.

- Yield to His will. Before we know God’s solution, He asks us to commit ourselves to His way. The Lord calls us to walk by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7) and to acknowledge that we are helpless without Him (John 15:5). To declare commitment to His way is always best.

Troubles are an unwelcome fact of life, but they can have value. God will see us through them all. He asks only that we have a tender heart, a teachable spirit, and a yielded will.

Recognize Your Vulnerability

Rationalizing sin is a signal that we're on dangerous ground and need to seek God's help.

If we see a fellow believer fall into sin, it can be tempting to judge. But what we often fail to acknowledge is that we, too, can easily stumble. Even though believers have a righteous standing before God, we must, like Paul, acknowledge an internal problem: “sin which dwells in me” (Romans 7:20).

Christians need to be continually on guard. Since ignorance of the nature of sin, the strategies of the enemy, and our own areas of weakness make us more vulnerable to stumbling, we cannot afford to be careless in our thinking. Anytime we find ourselves excusing, redefining, or rationalizing sin, we’ve lost our sensitivity to God.

If you’ve drifted from the Lord, turn back to Him by acknowledging your sin and accepting responsibility for it. Repentance means changing your mind and going in a different direction—toward God instead of away from Him.

The next step is harder: Respond with gratitude for God’s correction. Every time we fall into sin, our Father lovingly works to bring us back into fellowship with Him. His discipline may be painful, but it’s always good because it brings us to our senses and reconnects us with God.

Seek God Early

Begin each morning with the Lord in His Word—this simple habit will bring more joy into your life.

You’ve probably heard people say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. A similar concept applies to our heart and mind. The fuel we give them each morning greatly affects the remainder of the day. Think of time in God’s Word, prayer, and meditation as spiritual nourishment for your relationship with the Father.

David began his day with the Lord. In Psalm 63, he described seeking God early (the literal translation of “earnestly”). Having woken up hungry for time with his Creator, he rejoiced that his soul found satisfaction with the fullness of the Lord. And David broke out in thanksgiving and praise.

Just imagine having a day like that—filled with joy and gratitude. This is possible when we begin of our day with God, listening to Him speak through His Word and then talking with Him. Seeking the Lord not only fills our empty soul; it also increases our hunger for Him.

Do you find it challenging to set apart time with the Lord each morning? Habits begin with baby steps, not overwhelming resolutions. Start this morning (Psalm 5:3)—set aside five minutes. Be consistent and add a few minutes as you are able. You’ll be amazed by the difference it makes.
