Stir Up

The Advent season brings some of the most beautiful prayers of the church year. Most of the collects for Advent start with this simple phrase, ‘Stir Up.’ The prayer for next Sunday is one of these:

Stir up Your power, O Lord, and come and help us by Your might, that the sins which weigh us down may be quickly lifted by Your grace and mercy; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Anniversaries, birthdays, and different milestones have a way of causing us to reflect and ponder. Yesterday marked an interesting anniversary in my life. If I’m being honest, outside of my Baptism, it is one of the most important anniversaries I get to remember. Yesterday marked 30 years since my father marched my mom, brother, and myself out of our church after the pastor preached that the feeding of the 5000 was not a miracle.

I love books, especially old books. There is always some treasure in their musty and tattered pages. Maybe it is a line that the previous owner thought to highlight, a page that he or she dog-eared, or some paper hidden away in the pages, waiting to be found.
