Grace and peace, Saints
Read with Understanding
When studying 1 Corinthians 11, it is important to pay close attention to Paul's language. Throughout the chapter, Paul repeatedly speaks about the woman's "head" being covered when she prays or prophesies.
The Scripture says:
"But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head." (1 Corinthians 11:5)
It also says:
"For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels." (1 Corinthians 11:10)
Paul's emphasis is consistently on the head. While verse 15 teaches that a woman's hair is her glory and is given to her for a covering, the earlier verses focus on the condition of the head while ministering before God.
For this reason, many understand the passage to teach a broader principle of reverence, authority, and covering in the presence of God. The Bible does not specifically state whether that covering must be a veil, scarf, hat, or another form of covering. However, it does repeatedly emphasize that the head should not be uncovered when engaged in spiritual ministry.
Therefore, the issue is not merely about hair. The issue is honoring the principle Paul establishes concerning the head, authority, reverence, and conduct before God. Whether praying, prophesying, teaching, preaching, or ministering in sacred things, the emphasis of the passage remains on approaching God according to the order established in Scripture.
As with all biblical doctrines, each believer should study the entire chapter carefully, seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and be fully persuaded by the Word of God.
