Go to Saint Joseph this Lenten season
Lent is a time to deepen our relationship and friendship with the Lord. It is a time for us to get closer to God. It is time for an encounter with the Lord who loves us so much that He dies for us on the cross. It is a time for repentance, for conversion, and for conforming ourselves to the teachings of the Gospel. Who can better help us on this journey than Saint Joseph? He is a man of prayer and humility. He is a man whose actions speak louder than words. He is the earthly father of the Second Person of the Trinity and the most chaste spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He is the patron saint of the universal church.
The greatness of Saint Joseph lies hidden in his faith, obedience, and humility. He stays in the shadows so others can shine more brightly. Little is written about Saint Joseph, yet enough is known about him to paint a picture of the man who was both a great earthly father to Jesus and the most chaste spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. God can communicate to us through dreams, and, in Saint Joseph, they highlight the silent and obedient saint who is ready to spring into action at the moment that God commands him to do so. When the angel of the Lord makes known God’s plans to Joseph, he does what God commands him without hesitating, even though he may not comprehend it completely. He takes Mary as his wife and brings her into his home. He names the baby Jesus. Because of Saint Joseph, the heavenly commands are being fulfilled. Joseph is part of God’s plan in the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecy of the coming of a Messiah who will save people from all their sins. His righteousness safeguards, protects, and, especially, fulfills the concept of the virgin birth of Jesus in Mary.
According to Saint Bernadine, special graces were bestowed upon Saint Joseph. The first grace was the inherent intimate link to the Virgin as the most chaste spouse. Because of Mary’s greatly exalted virtues and her position as Queen of Heaven and Earth, it is fitting that Saint Joseph should be given admirable grace and virtues as well. The second grace was the privilege of living with the Lord. Joseph ministered to all the needs of Jesus. He dwelt with Christ himself through daily discourse, sleeping, eating, playing, and journeying together. He developed a deep father/son relationship. As He grew in wisdom and strength, Jesus would have looked up to St. Joseph for all the virtues he exhibited. The third grace was based on the fact that Joseph alone was chosen to be the father of Jesus. To be trusted with the care of the Second Person of the Trinity and the Most Blessed Woman among all women was not something to be taken lightly. God the Father must have made sure that the chosen man was capable of handling what was at stake. In Saint Joseph, God must have found a man after his own heart.
Saint Joseph was the head of the household of the Holy Family. He must have worked tirelessly to support his wife and growing child Jesus. Despite the financial limitations that being a carpenter might have placed on him, Joseph always placed his complete trust in the Lord and did what the Lord told him to do. His virtues of obedience, humility, chastity, fidelity, and trust are examples for all of us to follow.
Like Saint Joseph, we are each called to be the protector of the Mystical Body of Christ. We are called to love one another as Christ has loved us. As Christ must have looked up to St. Joseph for his virtues while he was on earth, we too should look up to Saint Joseph and imitate him. He is, after all, the Patron Saint of our Diocese. In a special way, let us commend ourselves to his guidance and protection as we celebrate the Feast of Saint Joseph, this Saturday, March 19. May God, our Blessed Mother Mary, and Saint Joseph be with you and accompany you always this Lenten season.
