How Ascension Day is more about Jesus coming than Jesus leaving...

My family used to celebrate ascension day by picnicking at the local state park. But I never did understand why such a day mattered other than reminding me that Jesus left the earth, which didn't seem like such a great idea in my mind.

But boy was I in for a surprise when I started studying what Jesus' ascension actually meant for his earliest followers!

While Luke is the only writer who details the story, Jesus' ascension is referenced many times in the New Testament, especially in Paul's letters, Hebrews, and the Gospel of John.

And the significance and meaning is way deeper than I ever imagined.

I'll tell you what I've learned tomorrow, especially about how the ascension has more to do with Jesus presence increasing rather than decreasing, as it first appears. And how Jesus going to "heaven" is entirely different than I used to think "going to heaven" meant.

Join us tomorrow and every Sunday at 10 AM as we celebrate Jesus, learn to join his Jubilee mission, and invite his presence on the earth as it is in heaven!

Creation is "subject to frustration" and is "groaning" says Paul in Romans 8.

What does he mean?

And what then does it mean to "Preach the gospel to the whole creation" as Jesus requested his disciples to do?

Tomorrow, we'll explore what that means and what our role in a "groaning, frustrated" creation looks like.

Come join us tomorrow and every Sunday at 10:00 AM in the basement of the Albright Center for worship, prayer, teaching, and a meal!

Is God trustworthy?

After the resurrection, in one chapter alone, the gospel of Mark records a variety of responses to Jesus... everything from fear and unbelief to spreading the message everywhere. We even see Jesus scolding his disciples for their unbelief, and then explicitly stating that "Everyone who believes and is baptized will be saved."

Just as in the rest of his gospel, Mark primarily shows us how others respond rather than telling us how to respond. This leaves us with the question, "How will I respond?"

But is God trustworthy enough to believe? And what does the evidence say?

What does the word believe actually mean? And how do we practice it, especially if the evidence seems to indicate otherwise?

Come join us tomorrow at 10:00 AM in the basement of the Albright Center for worship, prayer, a meal, and learning more about what it means to BELIEVE!

Welcome to Palm Sunday!

It's the day we remember the story your Bible might label "Jesus' Triumphal Entry" into Jerusalem. Although it certainly wasn't triumphant in the way the Jews expected for a Messiah. Or the way we today imagine a new governor or president being triumphant.

However, the story is making a clear point - Jesus is indeed a new king, because historically, this was the kind of parade a king had.

But who or what is the real enemy Jesus came to dethrone? And why did Jesus have to die to dethrone the enemy?

These are the themes of Holy Week, the week of the big showdown in the temple and in Jerusalem. The week that even Jesus' own disciples fled him. And the gospel as written by Mark reads almost like a novel building up to this very moment.

Join us to learn more tomorrow at 10 AM at the Albright Center (450 Chestnut Street, Sunbury)!

Between the transfiguration story and Jesus' entry to Jerusalem, Mark packs a handful of stories about Jesus that are bursting with conflicts and contrasts. Tomorrow, we'll take a look at these stories and discover...
-How Jesus kingdom is upside-down from the disciples' expectation
-What Jesus means by the "cup of suffering" and "baptism of suffering"
-How eternal life is different than going to heaven after you die
-And how the story of blind Bartimeaus connects with it all

Join us at 10:00 AM tomorrow (3-22) and every Sunday at the Albright Center in Sunbury (450 Chestnut St) as we worship, pray, learn, and conversate together!

*Tomorrow and next Sunday (3-22 and 3-29) we'll be meeting in the upper room at the Albright Center instead of the basement.
-You can enter through the same door as normal and take the elevator to Floor 1. Follow signs.
-Or you can enter through the large main doors of the building and turn left. Follow signs.

A new kind of teaching...

In Mark's story about Jesus, the first character (other than God himself) to correctly identify Jesus was an evil spirit.

As the people heard Jesus teaching and watched how unnerved and scared the evil spirits were around him, they responded in exclamation...

"What sort of new teaching is this? It has such authority!"

This Sunday, we'll be looking more closely at this "new teaching" and it's "authority"...

-What does "authority" actually mean, and how is it different than control?
-The connection between authority, author, and authenticity.
-What Jesus' authority to forgive sins (which the religious teachers called "blasphemy") has to do with physical healing, and how it's much more than what most of us mean by "forgiveness"
-What does it mean for us to have authority, and how do we get more of it?

Carefully crafted by a man named Mark, the oldest account we have of the life of Jesus rides like a speed-train through the early years of Jesus ministry. Fast-paced, action-packed, and the shortest of all the gospels, it's a great starting place if you're new to reading the Bible.

Within the first chapter alone you'll read of multiple exorcisms and healings, in addition to John the Baptist, Jesus' baptism, and his temptations in the wilderness. Only one chapter into the book, large crowds are already following Jesus so that "he couldn't publicly enter a town anywhere, but had to stay out in the secluded places..."

As you read the stories of healings, exorcisms, and more, imagine yourself in the stories... Where are you? Are you one of the crowd? Are you in the front row or are you watching from a distance? Are you the one asking for healing?

What are you seeing, thinking, and feeling as you imagine yourself in the story?

Like a good storyteller, Mark doesn't tell us who Jesus is (other than verse 1). Instead, he shows us by telling stories that portray how other people responded to Jesus. The l***r couldn't keep quiet, the crowds were amazed, the demons called him the "Son of God," the religious people thought he had a demon, his family thought he was "out of his mind", the Pharisees plotted to kill him, and four men took off someone's house roof just so they could get their friend healed!

This leaves us with the question...

How will I respond to Jesus?

Join us as we read and study this action-packed story of the most world-changing man who ever lived.

Over the next 8 weeks leading up to Easter, we'll unpack this gospel and talk about:
-How to get and stay hungry for Jesus, including 3 lies the devil tells us to ruin our appetites
-What is the "new teaching" and "authority" that the people saw in Jesus (1:27)
-What makes the "good news" so good
-Why did Jesus ride into Jerusalem on a young donkey
-What Peter still didn't understand about Jesus even when he correctly called him "The Messiah"

You can prepare yourself by reading the stories in Mark on your own.

Join us at 10:00 AM in the basement of the Albright Center (450 Chestnut St) in Sunbury!
