"On Corpus Christi Sunday, it is a good time for us to reflect upon reverence for the Eucharist. Receiving the Eucharist with reverence means approaching, accepting, and responding to the sacrament with humility, faith, and awareness of Christ’s real presence. It is both an interior disposition and an exterior expression.

Before you even approach the altar, reverence begins in your heart. This includes being in a state of grace, fasting for at least one hour before Communion (except water and necessary medicine), and approaching with a prayerful, humble spirit. The “Amen” you respond with is not just a word — it is a personal “Yes” to Christ’s presence and a commitment to be transformed by Him.

Approach with dignity: Walk slowly and deliberately toward the altar, with folded hands or head bowed, signifying the sacredness of the moment.

Before receiving: Bow your head or kneel.

When receiving: In the hand: Place your non-dominant hand over your dominant hand, as if your hands form an altar, then lift the Host and place the Eucharist in your mouth before leaving the Communion minister.

On the tongue: After “Amen,” tilt your head slightly, keep your tongue flat."

Bishop Hying invites all in the diocese to celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus by joining him at a special Mass at 7:00 pm at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church in Sun Prairie. During this Mass, he will consecrate the Diocese of Madison to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Please consider joining us for this joyous occasion!

Bishop Hying will consecrate the Diocese of Madison to the Sacred Heart of Jesus during a 7 p.m. Mass at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church on Friday, June 12th!

Everyone in the Diocese of Madison is encouraged to enthrone an image of the Sacred Heart in their homes. Having an image or statue enshrined within our homes serves as a reminder that we are called to love one another and to be witnesses to that merciful love to all who visit us.

There are five steps involved in enthroning the image.

1. Select a Sacred Heart image: Paint, purchase, or otherwise obtain a beautiful image or statue.
2. Select a Sunday: Pick a Sunday to enthrone the image and invite a priest or deacon.
3. Establish a place of dignity: Identify a place to reverently display the image of the Sacred Heart. This will serve as the “throne” of your home.
4. Prepare your hearts: Beginning seven days prior to Enthronement Sunday, pray together as a family.
The prayers can be found in a booklet prepared by the diocese, which will be available at the Mass on June 12, at talks that Bishop Hying will be giving around the diocese, and as a PDF, available at madisondiocese.org/SacredHeart
Other prayers to the Sacred Heart are also included in the booklet.
5. Enthronement Sunday: Gather after Mass and place Jesus on the throne of your home to reign as King of your hearts.
