Psa 39:4-5 says, "LORD, make me to know my end, And what is the measure of my days, That I may know how frail I am. (5) Indeed, You have made my days as handbreadths, And my age is as nothing before You; Certainly every man at his best state is but v***r. Selah"
As Steven Covey wrote over two decades ago in his book "Seven Habits of Highly Effective People," we should "begin with the end in mind."
What will the end of your life be? We often make plans for the day, the week, the month, and even years in advance. I remember the story of a young man telling his plans to an older man. After each of the younger man's plans were told to the older man he replied, "And then what?" The younger man went through his plans for college, his career, and his retirement. After retirement, the question again was asked, "And then what?" The young man hesitated before saying, "Well, I guess after that I die." And the older man once again asked, "And then what?"
That is the question. Death is not the end of our existence--merely the change of our residence. Our soul, the real us, will exist forever someplace. Where will yours be?
