May is Jewish American Heritage Month (JAHM), proclaimed in 2006 by President George W. Bush in response to resolutions passed by both the House and Senate. We are featuring prominent Jewish historical figures and modern day leaders throughout the month:

Remember the name Haym Salomon: He never wore a uniform, but without him the United States might not exist. During the Revolutionary War, funds were running dry before the decisive battle at Yorktown and General Washington’s troops were on the verge of mutiny. In desperation, he turned to Haym Salomon, a prominent Jewish banker in Philadelphia. Salomon got to work, called-in favors and raised the money needed to defeat the British and win the war.
After gaining independence, the newly established United States government was broke. Once again, Salomon stepped-up to raise money that helped keep the country going during its fragile early years.
Regrettably, Salomon was never repaid and died penniless. However, he was later honored with a commemorative coin and postage stamp.
Haym Salomon’s legacy lives on as one of the unsung heroes of the American Revolution: A true patriot whose sacrifices helped turn the dream of a free nation into reality.

The seventh day of Passover celebrates the splitting of the sea for our ancestors. God spoke to Moses and said, "Raise your staff and stretch your hand over the sea." The waters of the Red Sea immediately divided, leaving dry passage on the midst exending from shore to shore. The Israelites gained the opposite side in safety. When the Egyptians tried to follow, the seas closed around them ending the Egyptian army. Many celebrate by remaining awake the entire preceding night of "The Splitting of the Sea" and studying the Torah as a way of thanking God for this miracle.

The Miriam Cup is a relatively new Passover tradition. It is filled with water and placed next to Elijah's cup on the Seder table. Miriam was the sister of Moses. When the Israelites were wandering through the desert, a well of water followed Miriam. The cup is meant to honor Miriam's story and the spirit of all women who nuture their families, just as Miraim helped sustain the Isrealites.

There is an obligation to drink four cups of wine during the Seder. The four cups represent the four expressions of deliverance promised by God. I will bring out, I will deliver, I will redeem, and I will take you as my people.

1st Cup -- The cup of sanctification. God will bring you our from the burden of the Egyptians.
2nd Cup -- The cup of redemption. God will deliver you from slavery.
3rd Cup -- The cup of blessing. God will redeem with an outstretched arm and mighty hand of judgement.
4th Cup -- The cup of acceptance. The fourth cup recalls us to our covenant with the Eternal One, to the task that still awaits us as a people called to the service of God. God will take us as His people, and He will be our God. The preservation and the affirmation of hope.
