Today, on behalf of New Mt. Zion AME Church, we pause to honor and celebrate the beautiful legacy of Rev. Brenda Y. Thornhill, who faithfully served as Pastor from 1999–2006.

For seven impactful years, Rev. Thornhill led with vision, strength, and unwavering dedication. Under her leadership, our church experienced both spiritual growth and tremendous physical transformation.

During her tenure:
✨ New windows, roof, speaker system, lighting, chandeliers, and updated wiring were installed.
✨ The church was painted inside and out, and central heating and air were added to the fellowship hall.
✨ New locks, faucets, supply cabinets, chairs for church school, dishes, and a new computer were purchased.
✨ The Children’s Ministry was established, church school videos were introduced, and ushers were outfitted in uniforms and badges.
✨ The B.Y. Thornhill Sunbeam Choir and Daughters of Sarah ministry were founded.

In 2003, six members answered the call to ministry, and the church membership increased — a testament to her powerful leadership and spiritual guidance.

In 2004, additional improvements included a new refrigerator, stove, microwave, fellowship hall lighting, mini blinds, two water fountains, and the purchase of five acres of land.

Between 2005–2006, the structure of the church was beautifully enhanced with stucco placed on the exterior, new sidewalks, steps, floors, a courtyard, and a parking lot. New tables and a baptismal stand were also added.

Rev. Thornhill’s legacy is not only seen in the physical upgrades but in the lives she touched, the leaders she inspired, and the foundation she helped build for future generations.

Please keep our Pastor, Rev. Syphio Whack, lifted in prayer as she mourns the loss of her son.
We ask God to surround her and her family with comfort, strength, and peace during this incredibly difficult time.

God is BREAKING THE CYCLE!!! Groundhog Day reminds us of repetition. The same moment replayed again and again. Many of us know that feeling spiritually: praying the same prayers, fighting the same temptations, carrying the same hurts, and wondering why nothing seems to change.

The Bible reminds us that God did not create us to stay stuck in cycles.

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” — Romans 12:2

When we rely on our own strength, we often relive the same spiritual “day.” But transformation begins when we surrender the pattern to God. Christ offers us more than repetition—He offers renewal.

“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His mercies never fail. They are new every morning.” — Lamentations 3:22–23

Every day with God is an opportunity to move forward, not repeat yesterday’s failures. The past does not have to predict the future. Through repentance, obedience, and faith, God breaks cycles and opens new paths.

If your life feels like Groundhog Day, remember this: God specializes in new beginnings.

Today, choose growth over comfort. Choose faith over familiarity. Choose to step out of the cycle and walk into the new thing God is doing.

“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?” — Isaiah 43:19

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.” — Hebrews 10:24

Today is a reminder that our words matter, our actions matter, and how we show up for others matters. A simple act of kindness, an encouraging message, a helping hand, or a prayer can be exactly what someone needs.

Let’s be intentional about lifting one another up.
Let’s choose love—even when it’s hard.
Let’s do good—not for recognition, but because it reflects who we are called to be.

Who can you encourage today? 💛
Who can you love well today?

Did you know? Richard Allen (1760–1831) was the founder of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, the first independent Black denomination in the United States! ✝️

Born into slavery, Allen purchased his freedom and dedicated his life to serving God and his community. He was a powerful preacher, a fearless advocate for freedom, and a leader who believed that faith could transform lives. Through the AME Church, he created a spiritual home where Black people could worship freely and support one another. 🙌🏾

Allen’s legacy reminds us that faith, courage, and leadership can overcome even the greatest obstacles. Let’s honor his life by lifting our communities in love, prayer, and service today!

📖 “We must be watchful and prayerful, and live holy lives before God.” – Richard Allen
