On September 3, 1944, Rev. A. T. Usher preached his first service as pastor of Summerville Baptist Church.

During his time here, the church celebrated its 50th anniversary and moved into a new building at Central and Carolina Avenues. When he left in 1948, the church surprised the Usher family with a brand new Ford! 🚘

We’ll be taping, painting, moving furniture, and tackling a few other projects. Many hands really do make light work, and we’d love to have you there.

In 1966, the SB deacons recommended that boys and girls not swim together on church sponsored outings. By the summer of 1971, that recommendation was officially rescinded.

The church’s centennial history summed it up simply: “Times were changing.” It's a small piece of church history that says a lot about how quickly culture can change.
