Forgiveness gets real when you have another opportunity to hurt them back with what they did… and choose not to.

Because saying “I forgive you” is one thing.

Not bringing it up six months later during an unrelated argument is another.

Not using it to win.

Not reminding them who they used to be every time they mess up.

Not making them continually pay for something you said you released.

That’s harder.

And I think sometimes we say we’ve forgiven our spouse when what we’ve really done is put the offense in storage.

We don’t look at it every day.

But boy, do we know exactly where to find it when we’re angry.

Forgiveness doesn’t mean pretending it didn’t hurt.

It doesn’t mean trust magically repairs itself overnight.

And it certainly doesn’t mean tolerating repeated harmful behavior without boundaries.

But if there has been genuine repentance, healing and forgiveness, eventually we have to stop dragging yesterday into every argument happening today.

You cannot build a new chapter with someone while constantly sentencing them for an old one.
