New Mass parts for the Christmas Season:

In 1949, Dom Gregory Murray composed his "Missa Sanctae Mariae", and subtitled it "A People's Mass". It is based on the melodies of the Gregorian Chant "Missa VIII, De Angelis", but greatly simplified, making it very accessible to congregations everywhere. We have already been using the "Kyrie" whenever we have the Missa De Angelis "Gloria". The "Agnus Dei" is the same melody. The "Sanctus" is based on the "Glroia", and my own "Memorial Acclamation" is based on both the "Sanctus" and "Gloria".

The Mass parts by John Merbecke that we have been using for some years is likewise based on the Gregorian Chant "Missa XVIII", which is traditionally used on weekdays during Advent and Lent. It was originally composed in 1549, 400 years before!

Merry Christmas!

Well, my busy week in the UK is almost over. At this time tomorrow I will be at the airport to fly back to Charleston.

Tuesday through Thursday was the UK Ordinariate Annual Festival. I sang in the choir for all the liturgies, and was honored to play the organ Wednesday morning for the Votive Mass of St. John Henry Newman, with Monsignor Newton as celebrant.

Friday evening, I was welcomed to sing along with the choir of the Manchester Oratory (at St. Chad's Church) for the opening Mass of 40 hours Devotion. I will sing with them again today for the Corpus Christi sung Mass and Processions.

Then I will drive to Liverpool to join with the bellringers there for Vespers ringing.

A lot crammed into one week!
