Welcome to Episode #7 of our series, “Picture This” from Egypt! This episode takes us to the incredible Great Sphinx in Giza, Egypt! Located south of Cairo and in the vicinity of the Great Pyramids, the Great Sphinx still stands.
The Great Sphinx of Giza is a colossal 4,500-year-old (conventional dating) Egyptian monument carved directly from a single limestone ridge. It measures about 220 feet long and about 65 feet high. The statue features a lion’s body and a human head, serving as a powerful symbolic guardian. For much of its history, the Sphinx was buried up to its neck in the desert sand. An ancient stone tablet known as the "Dream Stele" stands between its paws today, detailing how Pharaoh Thutmose IV cleared the sand away after the statue appeared to him in a dream. The Sphinx faces due east, directly in line with the rising sun. Because of its lion body and eastward gaze, some scholars believe it was built to represent the sun god Ra or to serve as an astronomical marker for ancient solar worship.
