June Plowshares
It is with mixed feelings that I write this, my last issue of Plowshares, as I prepare for a new season in life and in ministry. This new season entails changes of various types, some welcomed while others not so much; some of them I can prepare for while others bring some levels of uncertainties.
A couple of scriptures from the apostle Paul come to mind as I prepare for the unwelcomed and uncertainty of life. The FIRST one is in Philippians 4:13, one that most of us tend to throw around without giving it much thought,
I can do all things through Christ Jesus
WHO gives me the strength.
Something to keep in mind is that this verse does not work like a magic wand where the more I repeat it, the better things will become. This verse is meant to challenge us. First, it is meant to confront us with our present condition: physically, mentally, and spiritually. It is meant as a reality check. Do I believe it? Do I trust God? Do I trust that no matter what, I continue to stand trusting?
Second, it means that God will, or can, see us through everything and anything that comes our way. God walks with us. God accompanies us. God is present everywhere, in many ways, and at all times.
BUT what happens when things don’t go OUR way? What happens when things don’t go as expected? Here is where the second scripture comes to play (although it shows a few verses earlier than the last.) That is Philippians 4:8 which reads,
Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just,
whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing,
whatever is commendable,
if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise,
THINK about THESE things.
Someone created a very enlightening and useful acronym for "Bible" that is very useful during moments of stress,
Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth
(Basic Instructions)
It is important to commit these two verses to memory, and IF you can’t memorize them, then write them down and keep them near. That way, as we are reminded of what things to think about and that God will see us through things, The Joy of the Lord and the peace that surpasses ALL understanding becomes a reality in our lives as we learn that strength and resilience come from God and not from our circumstances.
Until we meet again!
