Subiaco Abbey

Subiaco Abbey We are a Benedictine Abbey of monks living in Subiaco, Arkansas, USA. We follow the 1,500-year-old Rule as written by Saint Benedict. Benedict.

This Rule and monastic way of life flow from the ancient biblical model of Christian discipleship as found in Acts 2 & 4. We are 40 Benedictine monks living in Subiaco, Arkansas, USA. We follow the 1,500 year old Rule as written by our holy father St. This Rule and monastic way of life flow from the ancient biblical model of Christian discipleship as found in Acts 2:42-47 and Acts 4:32-35. Our bal

anced life of prayer and work (known as "Ora et Labora") has existed in Arkansas since our founding in 1878. Feel free to join us for our communal prayers that are spoken and chanted five times each day in our Abbey Church.

HOSPITALITY ON THE ROAD: Subiaco has one mission and two ministries: education and hospitality. Our hospitality is not only welcoming people to our retreat center on the grounds of the Abbey, but we also take hospitality on the road by assisting in parishes throughout our diocese and neighboring dioceses each and every weekend. We send out our monastic priests to cover for pastors who staff local parishes so that they can have time away for continuing education, vacations, and to be with their own family members who might be ill. Father Patrick was recently assigned to the parish church in New Dixie, Arkansas. Historically, Subiaco has founded parishes across Arkansas, North Texas, and South Missouri. Today, we still undertake parochial ministry, not full-time by having a monk stationed alone by himself in a parish, but by serving parishes throughout our region on weekends whilst still living at home in our monastery. For that, we monks chant: UIOGD!

BROTHERHOOD: Subiaco Academy graduates know that brotherhood is more than just a principle instilled while they are students; that brotherhood will endure for decades to come. Some of our graduates will form an even deeper bond of brotherhood moving into college. Aaron Pineda from Miami, Florida, just graduated a few weeks ago and plans to attend Texas A&M University . Our commencement speaker was Victor Mendoza, who graduated from Subiaco Academy in 2006. and earned his degree from Texas A&M University in 2010. He is currently the Managing Partner of Legado Capital Advisors and serves on the Subiaco Foundation Board and Investment Committee. Victor and his wife, Sarah, live in Houston with their two children. Our outgoing President for the Subiaco Academy Board of Trustees is Ryan Gehrig. Ryan is a 1991 graduate of Subiaco Academy, a 1996 graduate of Texas A&M University, and the president of Fort Smith Communities where he leads the hospital and clinics across the Fort Smith area. On his graduation day, Aaron Pineda was welcomed by Victor and Ryan into the Aggie Brotherhood. Pictured are (L-R): Victor, Aaron, and Ryan. That thumbs-up they are each making is the distinctive Texas A&M Gig 'em gesture symbolizing Aggie pride. As Aaron begins his journey at Texas A&M, he carries with him the strength of those who walked before him and the bond of brothers who will always stand beside him. Gig ’em! For that we monks chant: UIOGD!

REMEMBERING OUR DECEASED BROTHERS: As our nation celebrates Memorial Day, it is also a time for Subiaco to especially remember five of our Academy Trojan Brothers who gave their lives for our nation. When people arrive at the front of our academy, they often remark on our students sitting in a small plaza beneath a large tree. Our students are well aware that this plaza was a gift of the class of 1967 to honor two of their Trojan brothers who died during the Vietnam War... Raymond Sidney Kipp '67 and Mike Ikemeier '67. We also remember today: Paul Himmels '50, who died during the Korean War; and Nick Minden '38 and Walter Hugo Nolte '43 , who died during World War II. Our academy has been blessed to have many of our students serving their countries in the military and intelligence services, and we honor them on Veterans Day. Today, on this Memorial Day, we remember our five deceased Trojan Brothers who died in service to our country. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all the faithfully departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen. UIOGD!

LORD OF THE FLIES: Pentecost at the monastery means two things:
The Holy Spirit descends… and apparently the flies return too. One brings divine fire. The other tests our patience. It feels strangely biblical. Tongues of fire above the apostles… and buzzing distractions everywhere else. Lest our monastic life be too disrupted, Abbot Elijah has appointed Brother Damien as our 'Prefect of Pentecostal Fly Management' and Magister Muscarum ('Master of the Flies'). You will see Br. Damien usually in front of the Blessed Sacrament, but now also around the monastery with a fly swatter, setting traps for flies and using double-sided tape on milk cartons in some areas. May Brother be zealous in his endeavors. For that we monks chant: UIOGD!

MONASTIC EDUCATION: Due to the generosity of those who donated to our monastic education fund and our previous capital campaign, Abbot Elijah has assigned two of our monks for further studies. Brother Sebastian, pictured left, will begin studies for an MA in Education Leadership from Ave Maria University. Brother has one additional year of seminary studies at Saint John's School of Theology and Seminary. During this final synthesis year, in which he will be granted an M.Div. degree in May 2027, he will also be pursuing this new M.A. to serve our Abbey's education ministry at Subiaco Academy when he returns next August of 2027. Brother Augustine, pictured right, will begin his studies for a BA in Theology from Catholic International University. This will allow him to stay at our Abbey, complete his studies, and live the full monastic schedule. He, too, will be able to serve our Abbey's education ministry at Subiaco Academy through service and teaching. We are deeply thankful to all of those of you who gave generously to make these educational assignments possible. We are also deeply grateful to both monks for accepting this assignment from their abbot. For that, we monks chant: UIOGD!

MOMS IN PRAYER: For those who know the story from 1,600 years ago, you would know that Saint Augustine's mother (Saint Monica) was credited as being instrumental in his conversion. Even the great Saint Ambrose recognized that the tears and heartfelt prayers of a mom are powerful. We were honored to host the recent meeting of Moms International for their State Impact Gathering. This wonderful organization is an interdenominational Christian prayer movement. Groups are in more than 150 countries and their prayer booklet has been translated into 67 languages. For all the moms of the world, united in prayer for their children and the children of others, we monks chant: UIOGD!

SERVING AT THE ALTAR: We were blessed last week that one of our Subiaco Academy students, Greyson Collins, got up early each morning in order to serve our daily masses for the week. He is pictured here in the sacristy with a few minutes of quiet before the beginning of the daily Mass, where this day's presiding celebrant was Father Patrick Boland. Our Academy students have monks in the classroom, monks coaching, monks in church for our communal prayers and chant, monks for chaplaincy, monks to provide the sacraments, and monks who will journey with them through life after graduation. We are blessed to be called to the Benedictine monastic way of life, and we are likewise blessed to undertake our ministries of hospitality in our retreat center and education in our Academy. For that we monks chant: UIOGD!

ANCIENT MEETS NEW: When our new stone monastery was first built on the hill here in Subiaco, our Swiss monks knew from forty years of experiencing Arkansas heat that we needed as much shade as possible. Two pergolas were quickly built: one in East Park and one in South Park. In South Park, we had not only an expansive water fountain at the time but plenty of flowers and areas for sitting underneath the shaded trees. The monks would create stone walls on the hill and even include a small bandstand area. Sadly, a car hit our beloved and heavily fortified pergola in South Park and the cost for repairs will exceed the auto insurance payout. Today’s technology met yesterday’s craftsmanship, rather abruptly. It was a collision of eras, one built to last, the other built with airbags. Thankfully, the vehicle occupant was unharmed. Over the next few weeks, we will begin by getting an arborist to try to come up with a plan to hopefully save the beautiful wisteria that has grown there for over a century. The monks of old built that pergola to last for centuries, so the reconstruction cost will be a bit steep. It has provided shade to monks, students, visitors, and countless generations of our boys, who have taken time to eat or share brotherhood under the vines. In the photos, you will see the damage caused and some photos of our oldest postcards which displayed South Park with its fountain, flowers, and the pergola. We have every intention to find a way to reconstruct that pergola and save the wisteria. For that we monks chant: UIOGD!

A ROSE BETWEEN TWO…: In just a few short weeks, many of our alumni from Subiaco Academy will be returning to campus for our annual alumni reunion. Father William Wewers, Class of 1959, was appointed as a monastic liaison to the Alumni Association on behalf of the Abbey. Brother Adrian Strobel, Class of 1962, was appointed as the Chaplain to the Alumni Association and the Board of Directors. Tom Canada, Class of 2009, serves as our Director of Alumni Relations. If any of our alumni across the nation or around the world would like to convene a gathering in your area, reach out to Tom. He would be happy to help coordinate that and will bring along his two monastic sidekicks. For that we monks chant: ONWARD TROJANS and UIOGD!
