What's in it for me?

Jesus’ encounter with a blind beggar is described in Mark 10:46-52 Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus was sitting by the roadside begging. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.”So they called to the blind man, “Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.” Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus. “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him.The blind man said, “Rabbi, I want to see.” “Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.

Jesus never touched Bartimaeus; He just spoke the word, and Bart believed Him. Jesus said, “Your faith has healed you.” Bart is a great example of how to exercise faith. All of us must have faith. The Bible says, Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

FAITH BELIEVES EVEN WHEN YOU CANNOT SEE

Bart couldn’t see Jesus but he heard about Jesus. The Bible says, Mark 10:47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”

He believed before he saw any proof. Some people want visual proof that God exists.

FAITH RESISTS ANY BARRIERS TO CHRIST

When Bart cried out to Jesus, the people surrounding him didn’t say, “Good for you, Bart! Jesus can help you. Call out louder.” Instead of helping him, they rebuked him and told him to shut up! You’ll find when you are bold enough to cry out to Jesus, not everyone is going to be excited for you. In fact, there will be some people who will rebuke you and discourage you.

When these people try to hinder you, do what Bart did: Resist them. Don’t let them intimidate you into silence. When they told Blind Bart to be quiet, he wouldn’t be silenced. In verse 48 the word translated “shouted all the more” is krazen. We get our word crazy from it.

When the crowd told him to be silent, he shouted to the Lord. “Aaaaagh! Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” He yelled so loudly everyone got quiet.

What's in it for me?

Jesus stands before you today and asks, “What do you want me to do for you?” You can’t pray specifically until you are willing to admit your point of need. God can’t help you until you say, “Lord, I’m addicted to alcohol! I want to stay sober!” Or “Lord, I’ve got a po*******hy problem, I want to be pure!” Or “Lord, I’ve got a problem with anger, bitterness, or gossip and I want to be changed!

This month's Pastor Voice is submitted by Reverend Reginald Lewis of Open Bible Church

What's in it for me?

Do you know why God created you? It wasn’t so you could go to school and get a job and make a lot of money and then retire and then wait to die. God created you to have a personal relationship with Him and to enjoy Him forever. He has called you to a different kind of life. And He keeps on calling you away from the values and priorities of this crazy world. He keeps calling you back to the only thing that will give you HOPE—knowing Him and living for Him.

What's in it for you?

God’s purpose for your life is to know Him and to make Him known to others. There are blind people all around us who need to see Jesus.
Will you help them to the light?

This month's Pastor's Voice comes from Father Timothy Castor

“I think the universe is trying to tell me something.” “Don't worry, the universe will guide us.” “Maybe the universe is angry with us!”

The first time I heard remarks such as these, I thought they were rather odd. But lately I've been hearing them everywhere. On TV, on the internet, on the radio, even in day-to-day conversation. Since when did the universe become a sentient being? Perhaps this idea is best summed up In this quotation from Rajesh Walecha, a famous author and self-help guru: “The universe is a living entity. It will always help you if you ask and believe in it.”

This, of course, is nonsense. The universe can't hear you or help you, not any more than the tree in my front yard.

Only God can do that.

But more and more people no longer believe in God. Maybe they don’t profess themselves outright to be atheists, but they live as if God has no place in their lives. They are what we call “practical atheists.” And once God is removed from your life, something has to replace Him. Something has to account for the beauty and order we see all around us. A design must have a Designer; a creation must have a Creator.

And so, the universe itself (which appears to be mostly an empty vacuum) is endowed with divine attributes and becomes a replacement for God.

Of course, this is nothing new. Back in the first century, Saint Paul described it this way: “Men exchanged the truth about God for a lie; and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.” (Romans 1:25).

Ironically, this way of thinking is considered to be more rational, intellectual, scientific. And yet nothing could be more irrational! What kind of person looks at a painting, a smart phone, a spoon or any thing at all and says, “This must have come into being on its own accord, out of nothing and by its own power.”

Only an insane person–or a complete idiot–would make such a claim. And yet that is exactly what people do when they attribute the existence of the universe to the universe itself, rather than to a loving, personal God who keeps His creation in existence and cares for it.

The universe can't hear your prayers, only God can. The universe can't guide you, only God can. Moreover, only God can send His Son into the world to redeem us because “there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).

Those of us who believe must stand firm in our faith and share the Truth with others so that God may be worshiped and the souls of men may be saved.

Pastor of St Francis of Assisi Church in Sturgis
