Devotional -- Before You Act, Pray
In our fast-paced world, we're often tempted to react immediately when we see problems. Nehemiah shows us a better way. When his heart broke for Jerusalem, he didn't immediately start making plans or rushing into action. Instead, he spent days in prayer, fasting, and seeking God's heart. This wasn't procrastination - it was preparation. Prayer changes us before it changes our circumstances. When we bring our burdens to God first, we align our hearts with His will and receive His wisdom for the path ahead. Nehemiah's honest, humble prayer opened the door for God to work through him in extraordinary ways. He praised God, confessed sins, asked for guidance, and yielded to God's sovereignty. How different would our responses be if we consistently included God in our plans from the very beginning? Instead of forming our own strategies and asking God to bless them, we could seek His battle plan first. This foundation of prayer doesn't guarantee an easy path, but it ensures we're walking in God's strength rather than our own.
Bible Verse
'When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven. Then I said: "Lord, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments, let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel."' - Nehemiah 1:4-6
Reflection Question
How often do you include God in your plans from the very beginning, rather than asking Him to bless decisions you've already made?
Prayer
God, help me to seek Your heart and direction before I act. Teach me to be honest and humble in prayer, bringing all my burdens to You first. AMEN
