Today in Williams County history (1966): Groundbreaking ceremonies were held for the existing Stryker United Methodist Church. This house of worship replaced a large wooden frame church on the northwest corner of Defiance and Short streets that was dedicated on January 12, 1902. In May 1960 the congregation organized a building committee to oversee renovations to the 1902 church building; however, projected remodeling costs were greater than $90,000. The congregation decided a new church on a larger lot would better serve its needs. A 2.74-acre parcel was purchased at the corner of Maple and Cherry streets and ground was broken for the existing church on November 13, 1966. The first services were held in the new building on January 28, 1968, and the church was consecrated on May 19, 1968.
