As we acknowledge Russell Bower for his service to our country, we must also mention him as a notable member of the Hamlin community He arrived in Hamlin toward the end of June 1857. When the Civil War broke out in 1862, a post office was established in the Bower's home. The post office part was just a log hut, in front of his living quarters. In 1864, Russell Bowers enlisted in the Civil War joining company K, 36th WI Infantry When Russell Bowers joined the army, the post office was moved across the road to the Teeple Stage Coach Inn, in 1864. Henry Teeple was appointed Post Master two years after he handled the mail and served in this capacity until sometime after the Civil War, as again Russell Bowers came home and was reappointed, but the Post Office was soon established in what was becoming Eleva.
Thank you for your service, Russell 🇺🇸
