Newsletter note for Nov. 3:
I preached about saints yesterday, those folks who were significant influences on our lives. I had too many examples to use all of them in my sermon, so I thought I’d share one of them today. My friend Marilou Bork reminded me of a mutual ‘saint’: Rev. Andy Messenger, founding pastor at Disciples Christian Church in Bartlesville. Andy used to start worship each morning by reading the front page headlines from the local newspaper. He built his pastoral prayer and sometimes his sermons, from those articles, and from scripture. Those were his two goal posts for worship: The world’s news and the word of God. All life for the coming week would take place on the field between them. To ignore the world would be to climb into an ivory tower and retreat from responsibility to be a good citizen and a good Christian, as a witness for God to the world. To ignore God would be to shut off the light of conscience, of compassion, of justice and mercy, of law and of grace. What made the Christian faith relevant was God’s presence in each place, and each person, as fully and authentically as any character from the Bible. Andy saw his duty as pastor to radically believe in God’s incarnation into this world, NOW and HERE, not just 2000 years ago, and to proclaim that. This is still true for those of us who were also trained in that vision of ministry. I don’t use a newspaper like Andy did, but I hope I keep that focus on God With Us as clearly as he did.

Our heartfelt condolences to the family of Bruce Miller. His memorial service was here on Saturday, co-hosted with the United Methodist church, with their pastor, Joey Simpson, presiding as he knew Bruce personally.
