Stoddard Congregational Church

Stoddard Congregational Church We are a Christian church that believes in God's word as written in the bible. The Congregational Church was organized September 4, 1787.

The first meetings were held in homes of the members. The town charter of 1767 required that the “Grantees shall build a Meeting House for public worship within four years of the date of the Charter.” The Meeting House on Parker Hill and the Meeting House on Dow Hill were erected by the town and could also be used as Town Meeting houses. The present house of worship, however, was erected by and f

or the Congregational Society in 1836. Funds were raised to build the present building by selling the pews at $15.00 each. Total cost of the building was $2,010.70 with the bell adding to the total cost at $289.69. In 1942 it was desired to hold services during the winter months. These were held in private homes. Because of the war, church suppers were omitted. Vacation Bible School for children was carried on. In 1960 regular winter services were abandoned. In 1961 the church voted to abstain from becoming part of the United Church of Christ. Stoddard Congregational Church is an Independent church, following the teachings of the Bible as the Word of God and governed by the Congregational philosophy. The Annual Meeting is held on the fourth Monday of August. Pastor Ayres was officially hired on August 25, 2008, at the Annual Meeting. The church was wired for electricity in 1950 and the old lamps and stove were sold in 1951. One of the oldest pipe organs in New Hampshire, built in 1851, was installed in 1932. The trustees of the church secured it from the New England Organ Company for $650. This replaced a small parlor organ, manually pumped. In 1970 the Johnson Track organ was reconditioned and an electric blower was provided. The manual pump handle and gauge are still attached. This historic organ was again restored in 2003 to its original condition and re-dedicated. Another much needed improvement was the installation of dual hot-air furnaces to be able to hold year-round services in the church. In 2007 the Handicap Ramp and Entrance was completed. Parking is available by the ramp and at the site of the former one-room school house. Just completed in 2009 is the restoration of the belfry and steeple. The bell is rung just prior to the 10 am Service weekly.

We hope you come out to our Live & Silent Auction - Saturday 9am preview, 10am live starts! We have more items than last year! Thanks so much to our local community and the area merchants that have been so generous in offering items! We will have baked goods and coffee/water/etc so come and have breakfast and enjoy an exciting morning!
The proceeds will be helping us to preserve our historic 1836 building. We've done a great deal of work already with the improvement of a real foundation. We thank the LCHIP program for the matching grant to get that done. We are beginning to look toward the restoration of our steeple!

Our goal is to have the previous (nearly) 200 years of being a Christian church, continue for the next 200 years. Our goal is to preserve and keep well both our visual space in the Stoddard community, and our Christian presence.

May God bless our endeavors to provide a home for Christian faith, family, and community growth for generations to come. Amen.

We are having an open house / guest day this Sunday at the church. If you are interested in learning more about SCC and Christian faith, please come by. Meet our Pastor, our members, and "kick the tires" :).

Not all Christian churches are the same. You are welcome on any Sunday, but this day will be geared toward explaining how we observe our faith.

Some basics about SCC:
You do not need to be a formal member to attend.
If you choose to become a member, it allows you to vote on items.
We do not have any financial requirements; we do not track contributions.
Our faith statement and mission statement are on our website. In essence, we follow God's Word, as given in the bible.
Pastor Markus takes us through various segments of the bible to bring understanding to the congregation.
We run many community events (auction, apple fest, ham&bean dinner, Old Home Day events, and others. We always welcome all members to participate if they are able.

We hope to welcome you to our church this Sunday. We will answer any questions you may have.

We will have coffee at 9:30am, service at 10am, and coffee/snacks fellowship after service.

May God Bless Our Community.

SCC is planning a live auction for October (see our events). We are seeking donations of items and services. The proceeds of the auction are being dedicated to our building fund. This effort helps us to preserve our historic building. As anyone can see, our most pressing issue is the rebuilding of the steeple. There are many other issues with a 200 year old building, so it is a balance for us to both "rebuild" and "maintain" our iconic structure here in Stoddard.

We need the help of our community. If you you have items or services you can offer for our auction, it will go a long way to our efforts of preserving this landmark in Stoddard.

For those that do not know, we have managed to put a new foundation under the building; we have a real basement now. This was a multi-year's long effort by many people. We are dedicated to preserving the physical building, as well as being a beacon of Christianity in our community.

Please fee free to email [email protected] if you are willing to donate an item or professional service that will help us to complete our preservation efforts. From art work, to contractor services, collectables, or other items that will help us raised funds... we ask for your generous support.

We very much look forward to ringing our church bell again!

God and Country.
Thank you to the gentleman that stopped by the church lawn today to set down a bouquet of red and white roses at the soldiers monument. More so, the time he spent to pray for the departed soldiers of Stoddard, was a testament to God and country.

Please take a moment to stand with this lone gentleman in thought and prayer for the souls of those we have lost from the dawn of our country, through the civil war, world wars, Vietnam, the Middle East and so so many other conflicts where our young and brave have given their lives for us.

May their souls rest with God in peaceful eternity. Amen.
