The Danger of a Stubborn Heart
"But my people did not listen to my voice; Israel would not submit to me. So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts, to follow their own counsels." –Psalm 81:11–12 (ESV)
Psalm 81 is a psalm in which God reminds His people of His faithfulness and their responsibility to listen to Him. Earlier in the psalm, God recalls how He delivered Israel from Egypt, carried their burdens, and answered them in times of trouble. He had been a gracious and faithful Redeemer.
Yet despite all that God had done for them, Israel repeatedly turned away from Him.
It is in this context that God says, "But my people did not listen to my voice; Israel would not submit to me."
These words reveal the tragedy of a people who had received God's blessings but refused His guidance. Their problem was not that God's will was unclear. God had spoken. The problem was that they would not listen.
This passage exposes the natural rebellion of the human heart. Left to ourselves, we do not naturally submit to God's authority. We prefer our own wisdom, our own desires, and our own plans.
This is why God says, "Israel would not submit to me."
Their disobedience was not merely a failure of understanding; it was a failure of the heart. They knowingly resisted the God who loved them and sought their good.
Then comes one of the most sobering statements in Scripture: "So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts, to follow their own counsels."
This does not mean that God forced them into sin. Rather, as an act of judgment, He allowed them to pursue the path they had stubbornly chosen.
One of God's most severe judgments is not immediate punishment, but allowing people to follow their own sinful desires without restraint. When God withdraws His restraining grace, people are left to the blindness and corruption of their own hearts.
At first, following our own way may seem appealing. The world often tells us that freedom means doing whatever we want. But Scripture teaches the opposite. A heart separated from God's wisdom will eventually wander into confusion, sin, and sorrow.
The history of Israel proves this repeatedly. Whenever they rejected God's counsel, they suffered the consequences of their own choices.
Yet even in this warning, we see God's mercy.
The verses that follow reveal God's longing for His people to return to Him. God was not eager to judge; He desired their obedience and blessing. His heart was that they would listen, trust Him, and walk in His ways.
The same is true for us today.
Whenever God commands us through His Word, He is not trying to rob us of joy. He is leading us in the path of life. His wisdom is always better than our own understanding.
This passage calls us to examine our hearts honestly.
Are there areas where we know God's will but are resisting it? Are we listening to His voice, or are we insisting on following our own counsel?
A stubborn heart may feel strong, but it is actually fragile. True safety is found in humble submission to the Lord.
May we learn from Israel's failure and choose instead the path of trust and obedience.
Reflection:
Are there areas of my life where I am resisting God's direction?
Do I regularly seek God's wisdom, or do I rely primarily on my own understanding?
What would it look like for me to submit more fully to God's Word today?
Prayer:
Gracious Father,
Thank You for Your patience and mercy toward us. We confess that we are often like Israel, wanting to follow our own plans instead of listening to Your voice.
Forgive us for our stubbornness and pride. Soften our hearts and teach us to delight in Your will.
Lord, keep us from trusting our own wisdom above Yours. Help us to listen carefully to Your Word and to walk in obedience, even when it is difficult.
Thank You for not abandoning us when we wander. Draw us continually back to Yourself and lead us in the paths of righteousness.
Give us humble hearts that gladly submit to Your loving rule.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
Conclusion
One of the greatest dangers in the Christian life is a heart that refuses to listen to God. Yet one of the greatest blessings is a heart that humbly follows His voice. Therefore, dear friend, do not cling to your own counsel. Trust the Lord, listen to His Word, and walk in the wisdom that leads to life.
