THURSDAY BIBLE STUDY 5/28/2026
We call it a Bible study and it is; but our time together is so much more than that. It is a time of fellowship, and even though we have been meeting together for more than four years we are still getting to know one another.
We’ve had new ones join us and stay with us, and we have had the occasional ones who come to check us out, but then don’t return for one reason or another. Those who stay eventually join in the conversation when they realize it is a safe space in which to be somewhat vulnerable.
Today was one of those times when we seemed to have gone off the rails chasing rabbits, because some of the discussion did not immediately appear to have anything to do with what Paul wrote in Romans.
One participant said at the end that they really enjoyed our times as we get to hear about how others are doing their life of faith.
That is a key benefit for me. I hear stories that let me know the person in a more intimate way than just as someone who appreciates knowing the Bible.
Today offered us one of those times.
The participant’s grandfather was born in the late 1880’s. He never used a tractor, but always depended on his huge horse of a Clydesdale mix. Grandpa loved that horse.
One day after there had been significant rainfall for a few days, he was out with the horse and a wagon trailer. The trailer got stuck in the mud and as the horse tried to pull it out, it also sank deeper into the mud. The horse struggled so hard to pull the wagon that it sank up to its chest in the slime.
Grandpa was urging the horse (I forget its name) to pull, pull harder. Finally, with tears in his eyes, he told the horse, “If you get us out of this, I’ll never make you work again.”
They got home and the next day Grandpa went and bought a tractor.
Stories like this—lived experiences—are a part of who we become as adults.
Sharing these stories help us to feel more connected to those with whom we share this small segment of our life on Thursday afternoons.
You are more than welcome to join us. Maybe the day you come, you will get to hear a story that will impact your life.
