(Today we continue our 40 hours of Eucharistic Adoration. The church will be open all day and night, the Eucharist will be exposed upon the altar for Adoration until 7pm on Thursday. Come and spend time with Jesus.) "You also realize, Venerable Brothers, that the Eucharist is reserved in churches or oratories to serve as the spiritual center of a religious community or a parish community, indeed of the whole Church and the whole of mankind, since it contains, beneath the veil of the species, Christ the invisible Head of the Church, the Redeemer of the world, the center of all hearts, by whom all things are and by whom we exist. Hence it is that devotion to the divine Eucharist exerts a great influence upon the soul in the direction of fostering a social love, in which we put the common good ahead of private good, take up the cause of the community, the parish, the universal Church, and extend our charity to the whole world because we know that there are members of Christ everywhere." Our Gospel passage today is the classic question about money. "Should we pay the census tax to Caesar or not?" Of course we all know, Jesus Elegant response, "Repay to Caesar what is what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God."But rather than focusing on the answer to this question, instead lets look at those who asked Jesus. Since I was young, I was always encouraged by my parents and my teachers to ask lots of questions. These Pharisees and Herodians are being far from sincere with this question. First, both groups are rivals and rarely ever have the same viewpoint, Secondly, you can sense the sarcasm in their questioning as they heap on insincere praise. Finally they phrase the question in such a away as to try to prevent any discussion but rather just force one answer or another. We often approach God exactly like this. We have a preconceived notion of what we think the answer should be and then insincerely ask Christ to confirm what we already"know" to be the correct answer. Today we see what happens when you try to trap Jesus. He eloquently sides steps the trap and leaves the people spell bound in the beauty of the Truth. Let us always approach our Lord with a sincere desire to hear His answer. ............................................................................................................................................................. Nuestro pasaje del Evangelio de hoy es la clásica pregunta sobre el dinero. "¿Deberíamos pagar el impuesto del censo a César o no?" The following is an account of the martyrdom of St. Justin 165 AD. "The Prefect Rusticus says: Approach and sacrifice, all of you, to the gods. Justin says: No one in his right mind gives up piety for impiety. The Prefect Rusticus says: If you do not obey, you will be tortured without mercy. Justin replies: That is our desire, to be tortured for Our Lord, Jesus Christ, and so to be saved, for that will give us salvation and firm confidence at the more terrible universal tribunal of Our Lord and Saviour. And all the martyrs said: Do as you wish; for we are Christians, and we do not sacrifice to idols. The Prefect Rusticus read the sentence: Those who do not wish to sacrifice to the gods and to obey the emperor will be scourged and beheaded according to the laws. The holy martyrs glorifying God betook themselves to the customary place, where they were beheaded and consummated their martyrdom confessing their Savior." .............................................................................................................................................................. El siguiente es un relato del martirio de San Justino en el año 165 d.C. "El Prefecto Rústico dice: Acercaos y sacrificaos todos a los dioses. El obispo Burbidge ha asignado al Padre Portillo a la Iglesia Católica de San Timoteo en Chantilly, a partir del 25 de junio. Tendremos una recepción después de cada Misa (excepto la de las 2:00pm) durante el próximo fin de semana, para agradecer al Padre Portillo por sus cuatro años de servicio generoso y amoroso en nuestra parroquia Cristo Redentor!

Bishop Burbidge has assigned Fr. Portillo to St. Timothy Catholic Church in Chantilly, starting June 25th. We will have a reception after every Mass (except for the 2:00pm Mass) next weekend to thank Fr. Portillo for his 4 years of generous and loving service here at Christ the Redeemer!

Sun, May 31, 2026 - Trinity Sunday

We celebrate today the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. Though this is a huge mystery of our faith as well as one of its most central tenets, it also is a beautiful concept to begin to try to understand. The concept of the Trinity is revealed to us by God. As our Preface for today reads: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are "one God, not in the unity of a single person, but rather in a Trinity of one substance." This is a fancy way of saying that the Father is God, the Son is God, the Holy Spirit is God; but that there is only one God. This unity is actually an invitation to each of us. This Trinity exists before all time and space, and was fully present at the time of creation. Therefore the Trinity is more than just a way we relate to God but rather a description of how God relates to himself. If we truly are the "body of Christ then we are "invited" to share in the love of the Father just as Christ shares in His love. "God so loved the world that He gave His only Son...". This is a description of the invitation that God the Father extends to the world to be loved as Jesus is loved. We are all brothers and sisters in Christ adn should treat each other as we treat Jesus and as we would want Jesus to treat us. .............................................................................................................................................................. Celebramos hoy la solemnidad de la Santísima Trinidad. Aunque este es un gran misterio de nuestra fe, así como uno de sus principios más centrales, también es un concepto hermoso para comenzar a tratar de entender. El concepto de la Trinidad nos es revelado por Dios. Como se lee en nuestro Prefacio de hoy: el Padre, el Hijo y el Espíritu Santo son "un Dios, no en la unidad de una sola persona, sino en una Trinidad de una sola sustancia". Esta es una manera elegante de decir que el Padre es Dios, el Hijo es Dios, el Espíritu Santo es Dios; pero que solo hay un Dios. Esta unidad es en realidad una invitación para cada uno de nosotros. Esta Trinidad existe antes de todo el tiempo y el espacio, y estaba completamente presente en el momento de la creación. Por lo tanto, la Trinidad es más que una forma de relacionarnos con Dios, sino más bien una descripción de cómo Dios se relaciona consigo mismo. Si realmente somos el "cuerpo de Cristo", entonces estamos "invitados" a compartir el amor del Padre así como Cristo comparte su amor. "Dios amó tanto al mundo que dio a su único Hijo ...". Today in our Gospel passage we see the pharisees once again being cowardly. Jesus asks them a simple question. "Was John’s baptism of heavenly or of human origin?" They answer Him, "We do not know.” At first glance this all seems fine except that we are told that they really do not believe that John's preaching and baptism is of God. However, they are too fearful of the crowd because the public opinion was different than their opinion. They are frustrated with Jesus. They do not believe that He is the Messiah. They believe that they are on the side of right and Jesus is misleading the people. Yet when given opportunities to speak their mind, they do not have the courage to honestly and openly show their opposition to Him. It should not be a surprise since this is the same thing they did with John the Baptist. If we are so caught up in what people think of us, then it will be very hard to seek the truth. To ask things openly and to find the answers to questions that we have been wondering about. Jesus very cleverly shows them that they are not really seeking answers to the questions that they are asking. He points out their intellectual dishonesty and cowardice. .............................................................................................................................................................. Hoy en nuestro pasaje del Evangelio vemos a los fariseos una vez más siendo cobardes. Jesús les hace una pregunta sencilla. "¿Fue el bautismo de Juan de origen celestial o humano?" Ellos le responden: "No sabemos". A primera vista, todo esto parece estar bien, excepto que se nos dice que realmente no creen que la predicación y el bautismo de Juan sean de Dios. Sin embargo, tienen demasiado miedo de la multitud porque la opinión pública era diferente a la suya. Están frustrados con Jesús. No creen que Él es el Mesías. Creen que están del lado de la justicia y que Jesús está engañando a la gente. Sin embargo, cuando se les da la oportunidad de decir lo que piensan, no tienen el valor de mostrar honesta y abiertamente sus ideas. oposición a Él. St. Jose Marie Escriva expalining today's Gospel passage: Our Lord comes to pick [figs], knowing full well that he won’t find any at this time of year. However, when the tree proves to be barren in spite of its apparent fertility and luxuriant leaves, Jesus commands, “Let no man ever eat fruit of yours hereafter.” Hard words, indeed! May you never more bear fruit! How must the disciples have felt, especially if they considered that it was the Wisdom of God who had thus spoken? Jesus curses the fig tree because in it he has found only the appearance of fruitfulness — many leaves. Let this be a lesson to us. There is no excuse for being unproductive. Some might say “I don’t know enough…” But that is no excuse. Or else, “I am unwell, I haven’t much talent, the conditions are not right, my surroundings…” These aren’t excuses either. How pitiful the man who adorns himself with the foliage of a false apostolate, who has all the outward appearance of leading a fruitful life, but is not sincerely attempting to yield fruit! .............................................................................................................................................................. San José María Escrivá explicando el pasaje del Evangelio de hoy: Nuestro Señor viene a recoger [higos], sabiendo muy bien que no encontrará ninguno en esta época del año. Sin embargo, cuando el árbol demuestra ser estéril a pesar de su aparente fertilidad y sus frondosas hojas, Jesús ordena: "Nadie coma jamás de tus frutos". ¡Palabras duras, de hecho! ¡Que nunca más llegues a dar frutos! ¿Cómo se habrían sentido los discípulos, especialmente si consideraron que era la Sabiduría de Dios quien había hablado así? Jesús maldice la higuera porque en ella solo ha encontrado la apariencia de fructificación: muchas hojas. Que esto sea una lección para nosotros. No hay excusa para ser improductivo. Algunos dirán "No sé lo suficiente ..." Pero eso no es excusa. O bien, “no me encuentro bien, no tengo mucho talento, las condiciones no son las adecuadas, mi entorno…” Estas tampoco son excusas. ¡Qué lástima el hombre que se adorna con el follaje de un falso apostolado, que tiene toda la apariencia exterior de llevar una vida fecunda, pero no intenta sinceramente dar fruto!
