I will be away from the parish on my yearly retreat from January 12-17. Please pray for me and know that I am praying for you. St. Anselm gives me words of wisdom, a rousing of the mind to the contemplation of God: "Insignificant man, escape from your everyday business for a short while, hide for a moment from your restless thoughts. Break off from your cares and troubles and be less concerned about your tasks and labors. Make a little time for God and rest a while in him. Enter into your mind’s inner chamber. Shut out everything but God and whatever helps you to seek him; and when you have shut the door, look for him. Speak now to God and say with your whole heart: 'I seek your face; your face, Lord, I desire.' Come then, Lord my God, teach my heart where and how to seek you, where and how to find you." PRAYER: O God, You inspired St. Anselm with an ardent desire to find You in prayer and contemplation among the bustle of everyday occupations, help us to take time in the feverish rhythm of our days, among the worries and cares of modern life, for conversation with You, our only hope and salvation! We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. St. John the Baptist sums up clearly and concisely what it means to be a Christian. “I must decrease and He must increase.” In saying this, John the Baptist is speaking on multiple levels. He means that it is time for the disciples of John to become the disciples of Jesus, the true Messiah. John means that he must let Jesus take over. John is also speaking in a spiritual way by exhorting all of us to become more and more Christlike, to lose ourselves in Him. We need to become Him whom we receive from the altar. ............................................................................................................................................................. San Juan Bautista resume de forma clara y concisa lo que significa ser cristiano. "Debo disminuir y Él debe aumentar". Al decir esto, Juan el Bautista habla en múltiples niveles. Quiere decir que es hora de que los discípulos de Juan se conviertan en discípulos de Jesús, el verdadero Mesías. Juan quiere decir que debe dejar que Jesús tome el control. Juan también habla de manera espiritual al exhortarnos a todos a ser cada vez más como Cristo, a perdernos en Él. Necesitamos convertirnos en Aquel a quien recibimos del altar.

Today's Gospel reminds me of a very simple but beautiful truth. and that is just how amazingly compassionate Jesus Christ is to those who are suffering and in need. “Lord, if you wish, you can make me clean" said the l***r. Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him, (which by the way no one had done since he was identified as a l***r) and said, “I do will it. Be made clean.” And the leprosy left him immediately. Now imagine ourselves, sinners, in the exact same exchange. "Lord if you wish you can free me from my sins." He embraces us tenderly though we do not deserve it and says to us, "I do will it. Be forgiven." And immediately our sin left us. Jesus took on our Human nature, He knows what we go through, what we suffer. He identifies with us and with great compassion He responds to our deepest need. ............................................................................................................................................................. El evangelio de hoy me recuerda una verdad muy simple pero hermosa. y eso es lo asombrosamente compasivo que es Jesucristo con los que sufren y están necesitados. “Señor, si quieres, puedes limpiarme” dijo el leproso. Jesús extendió la mano, lo tocó (lo cual por cierto nadie había hecho desde que fue identificado como leproso) y dijo: Quiero. Queda limpio.” Y la lepra lo dejó de inmediato. Ahora imagínense a nosotros mismos, pecadores, en el mismo intercambio exacto. "Señor, si quieres puedes liberarme de mis pecados". Nos abraza tiernamente aunque no lo merecemos y nos dice: “Quiero. Queda limpio” E inmediatamente nuestro pecado nos abandonó. Jesús asumió nuestra naturaleza humana, Él sabe por lo que pasamos, lo que sufrimos. Se identifica con nosotros y con gran compasión responde a nuestra necesidad más profunda.

We read in today's Gospel, "And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth." What an amazing experience it must have been to hear the word of God spoken by, well, the Word of God. And such beautiful words of hope to all those in need. "Glad Tidings" He said... meaning good news, a special message of hope to the most down trodden and marginalized. Do not be afraid, the Lord's anointed is here, God has heard you and is answering you. Imagine as you pour out your heart to Jesus, that he says to you clearly and authoritatively, Today you have been heard and your prayers are answered! ............................................................................................................................................................. Leemos en el Evangelio de hoy: "Y todos hablaban muy bien de él y se maravillaban de las palabras llenas de gracia que salían de su boca". Qué experiencia tan asombrosa debe haber sido escuchar la palabra de Dios hablada por, bueno, la Palabra de Dios. Y tan hermosas palabras de esperanza para todos los necesitados. "Buenas noticias", dijo ... es decir, la buenas nueva, un mensaje especial de esperanza para los más oprimidos y marginados. No temas, el ungido del Señor está aquí, Dios te ha escuchado y te responde. Imagina que, al derramar tu corazón por Jesús, te dice clara y autoritariamente: ¡Hoy te han escuchado y tus oraciones son contestadas!

Today we celebrate Epiphany Sunday. One of the ways that I enjoy meditating upon the mysteries of our Faith and different moments in the life of Christ is to pray the rosary while reflecting upon these topics. Many years ago, I wrote the Mysteries of the Epiphany of the Most Holy Rosary. I find it very fruitful to pray and meditate upon these 5 mysteries during this time we are celebrating Wise Men's visit. The 5 Mysteries of the Epiphany and their corresponding Virtues are: 1) Annunciation to the Magi (Wonder); 2) Journey of the Magi (Abandonment to Divine Providence); 3) Adoration of the Christ Child (Humility); 4) Gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh (Generosity); 5) The Return home by a different route (Conversion). ............................................................................................................................................................. Hoy celebramos el Domingo de Epifanía. Una de las formas en las que disfruto meditando sobre los misterios de nuestra Fe y los diferentes momentos de la vida de Cristo es rezar el rosario mientras reflexiono sobre estos temas. Hace muchos años escribí los Misterios de la Epifanía del Santísimo Rosario. Encuentro muy fructífero rezar y meditar sobre estos 5 misterios durante este tiempo que estamos celebrando la visita de los Reyes Magos. Los 5 Misterios de la Epifanía y sus Virtudes correspondientes son: 1) Anunciación a los Magos (Maravilla); 2) Viaje de los Magos (Abandono a la Divina Providencia); 3) Adoración del Niño Jesús (Humildad); 4) Regalos de oro, incienso y mirra (Generosidad); 5) El Regreso su país por una ruta diferente (Conversión).

Sat, Jan. 4, 2025 - St. Elizabeth Ann Seton (Co-Patron of the Arlington Diocese)

On the Feast of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, I am always inspired by this woman Today is the Feast day of the co-patron of the diocese, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. She is the first American born Saint. She was Anglican and had to travel to Italy because her husband was sick and needed a better climate than New York to convalesce. In Italy they were detained in quarantine for over a month for fear of Yellow fever where her husband eventually passed away. Elizabeth stayed in Italy for a little over a year before and stayed with friends who were Catholic. She would attend Mass daily in their private chapel with the family and neighbors. Seeing their devotion and reverence for the Eucharist led Elizabeth to a profound faith in the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. After her return to New York, Elizabeth took instructions in the Catholic Faith and converted to Catholicism. She was ostracized by her protestant friends and looked at with suspicion by any Catholics she encountered because she was a convert. She eventually moved to Baltimore and finally settled in Emmitsburg where a new Catholic community was just getting established. She founded a free school for girls and founded a religious order for women called the Daughters of Charity of St. Joseph. This order was the first religious order for women founded in the united states and the school was the first free Catholic school in the United States. I am deeply inspired by her sense justice for the poor and underserved, especially her dedication to eh education of the women who joined her order and the education of the girls they served. I am also inspired by her resolute belief in the Holy Eucharist and her willingness to be come Catholic and receive communion no matter the personal toll that it took on her. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, pray for us. ............................................................................................................................................................. Hoy es la fiesta de la copatrona de nuestra diócesis, Santa Isabel Ann Seton. Ella es la primera santa nacida en Estados Unidos. Era anglicana y tuvo que viajar a Italia porque su esposo estaba enfermo y necesitaba un clima mejor que el de Nueva York para convalecer. En Italia estuvieron detenidos en cuarentena durante más de un mes por temor a la fiebre amarilla, donde finalmente falleció su esposo. Isabel se quedó en Italia un poco más de un año antes y se quedó con amigos que eran católicos. Asistía a misa todos los días en su capilla privada con la familia y los vecinos. Ver su devoción y reverencia por la Eucaristía llevó a Isabel a una fe profunda en la presencia real de Jesucristo en la Eucaristía. Después de su regreso a Nueva York, Elizabeth recibió instrucciones en la fe católica y se convirtió al catolicismo. Sus amigos protestantes la condenaron al ostracismo y cualquier católico que encontrara la mirara con sospecha porque era una conversa. Finalmente se mudó a Baltimore y finalmente se estableció en Emmitsburg, donde se estaba estableciendo una nueva comunidad católica. Fundó una escuela gratuita para niñas y fundó una orden religiosa para mujeres llamada las Hijas de la Caridad de San José. Esta orden fue la primera orden religiosa para mujeres fundada en los Estados Unidos y la escuela fue la primera escuela católica gratuita en los Estados Unidos. Thu, Jan. 2, 2025 - St. Gregory Nazianzen and St. Basil the Great

St. Gregory was born in Asia Minor, about 325 AD, and died in 389. He became friends with Basil at very young age but left home and studied rhetoric and philosophy in Cappadocia, Palestine and Alexandria. After his baptism at age 30, Gregory went to Athens where he renewed his friendship with Basil, where they both continued their studies of rhetoric. Basil and Gregory for different reasons both decided to live a life of austerity and sacrifice, they both began to live the life of religious hermits and eventually joined in a newly founded monastery. Both Basil and Gregory were ordained priests and argued against A***nism, a heresy denying the divinity of Christ. Basil became known for sweeping reforms in Caesarea. He defended the faith against the A***n heresy, refusing communion to those who did not believe in the divinity of Christ. He was known as a great orator, preaching twice a day to huge crowds. He built a hospital that was so large and vast it was called a wonder of the world. He organized famine relief and created a system of soup kitchens to feed the poor. Gregory became the bishop of Caesarea and then eventually Constantinople, where he tried to bring back Christians from A***nism. He was able to convert the emperor Theodosius to Catholicism and with his help was able to push back the influence of A***nism in Constantinople. He preached eloquently on the Trinity and on the divinity of Christ. Two remarkable saints who combined the best of the East and the West and championed the truth of the Divinity of Christ. St. Gregory Nazianzen and St. Basil the Great, pray for us. ............................................................................................................................................................. San Gregorio nació en Asia Menor, alrededor del año 325 d.C., y murió en el año 389. Se hizo amigo de Basilio a una edad muy temprana, pero abandonó su hogar y estudió retórica y filosofía en Capadocia, Palestina y Alejandría. Después de su bautismo a los 30 años, Gregorio viajó a Atenas donde renovó su amistad con Basilio, donde ambos continuaron sus estudios de retórica. Basilio y Gregorio, por diferentes razones, decidieron vivir una vida de austeridad y sacrificio, ambos comenzaron a vivir la vida de ermitaños religiosos y finalmente se unieron en un monasterio recién fundado. Tanto Basilio como Gregorio fueron ordenados sacerdotes y argumentaron contra el arrianismo, una herejía que negaba la divinidad de Cristo. Basilio se hizo conocido por sus amplias reformas en Cesarea. Defendió la fe contra la herejía arriana, negando la comunión a quienes no creían en la divinidad de Cristo. Era conocido como un gran orador, predicando dos veces al día ante grandes multitudes. Construyó un hospital que era tan grande y vasto que fue llamado una maravilla del mundo. Organizó alivio del hambre y creó un sistema de comedores populares para alimentar a los pobres. Gregorio se convirtió en obispo de Cesarea y luego de Constantinopla, donde intentó rescatar a los cristianos del arrianismo. Pudo convertir al emperador Teodosio al catolicismo y con su ayuda pudo hacer retroceder la influencia del arrianismo en Constantinopla. Predicó elocuentemente sobre la Trinidad y sobre la divinidad de Cristo. Dos santos notables que combinaron lo mejor de Oriente y Occidente y defendieron la verdad de la Divinidad de Cristo. San Gregorio Nacianceno y San Basilio el Grande, rueguen por nosotros.

Wed. Jan 1, 2025 - Mary, Mother of God (Holy Day of Obligation)

Merry Christmas. (Today, January 1, is the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God and is Holy Day of Obligation: Masses in English are at 8:00am, 10:00am and 5:30pm Masses in Spanish are at 12:00pm and 2:00pm) Our gospel today tells us that all who heard it were amazed by what what the shepherds recounted had been told them by the angel. Are we amazed by what we have heard? Do we marvel at the mystery of God becoming Man and then entering our lives asa small child swaddled and laid in manager? Are we, like teh shepherds willing to adore Him? Mary reflected upon the mysteries that were taking place before her. She considered what these mysteries meant for her and for the world. She prayed and guarded these ideas within her heart. We too must take this approach to the world we live in. We should like Mary look for the path of good, light and peace in the midst of darkness and sorrow. We must leave room for God to touch us with His presence and inspire us with His love. Most of all, we must pray. We must pray that God's will is done in all things and that all things will find their origin and fulfillment in Him. Las Misas en español son a las 12:00p y 2:00p) Nuestro evangelio de hoy nos dice que todos los que lo oyeron quedaron asombrados por lo que los pastores contaron que les había dicho el ángel. ¿Nos asombramos nosotros por lo que hemos oído? ¿Nos maravillamos ante el misterio de Dios haciéndose Hombre y entrando luego en nuestras vidas como un niño pequeño envuelto en pañales y acostado en un pesebre? ¿Estamos dispuestos, como los pastores, a adorarlo? María reflexionó sobre los misterios que estaban sucediendo ante ella. Consideró lo que estos misterios significaban para ella y para el mundo. Ella oró y guardó estas ideas dentro de su corazón. También nosotros debemos acercarnos a este mundo en el que vivimos. Como María, deberíamos buscar el camino del bien, la luz y la paz en medio de las tinieblas y el dolor. Debemos dejar espacio para que Dios nos toque con su presencia y nos inspire con su amor. Sobre todo, debemos orar. Debemos orar para que se haga la voluntad de Dios en todas las cosas y que todas las cosas encuentren su origen y cumplimiento en Él. Feliz Navidad y bendito Año Nuevo para todos.

Merry Christmas. (Tomorrow, January 1, is the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God and is Holy Day of Obligation: Vigil Masses will be today at 5:30p in English and 7:00p in Spanish; On Wednesday, Masses in English are at 8:00am, 10:00am and 5:30pm Masses in Spanish are at 12:00pm and 2:00pm) On this last day of the year, the Church gives us St. John's comforting hymn of hope to reflect upon. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race; the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." (John 1:1-5) Jesus Christ is the beginning and the end, the Alpha and the Omega. He is coeternal with the Father yet became Man and took on the flesh of our humanity. He is invisible who became visible, and the Light from which all evil is dispelled. Jesus Christ is the answer to every question, solution to every problem and is the Hope of all in need. Without Jesus there is nothing, and with Him nothing else matters. As we conclude this year may Jesus Christ reign now and forever... for Jesus Christ is Lord! Todas las cosas vinieron a la existencia por él y sin él nada empezó de cuanto existe. Él era la vida, y la vida era la luz de los hombres. La luz brilla en las tinieblas y las tinieblas no la recibieron.". (Juan 1: 1-5) Jesucristo es el principio y el fin, el Alfa y la Omega. Él es coeterno con el Padre, pero se hizo Hombre y tomó la carne de nuestra humanidad. Él es invisible quien se hizo visible, y la Luz de la que se disipa todo mal. Jesucristo es la respuesta a cada pregunta, la solución a cada problema y es la Esperanza de todos los necesitados. Sin Jesús no hay nada, y con Él nada más importa. Al concluir este año, que Jesucristo reine ahora y por siempre... ¡porque Jesucristo es el Señor! Amén.

Merry Christmas. We are on the 6th day of the Octave of Christmas. "At Christmas Christ comes to us like a little child, small and helpless, so much in need of all that love can give. Are we ready to receive Him? Before the birth of Jesus His parents asked for a simple dwelling place, but there was none. If Mary and Joseph were looking for a home for Jesus, would they choose your house and all it holds? Today there is so much trouble in the world, and I think that much of it begins at home. The world is suffering because there is no peace in the family. We have so many thousands of broken homes. We must make our homes centers of compassion and forgiveness, and so bring peace. Make your house, your family, another Nazareth, where love, peace, joy, and unity reign, for love begins at home. You must start there and make your home a center of love. You must be the hope of eternal happiness to your wife, your husband, your child, to your grandfather, your grandmother, to whoever is connected to you." Feliz Navidad. Estamos en el día 6 de la Octava de Navidad. "En Navidad, Cristo viene a nosotros como un niño pequeño, pequeño e indefenso, tan necesitado de todo lo que el amor puede dar. ¿Estamos listos para recibirlo? Antes del nacimiento de Jesús, sus padres pidieron una vivienda sencilla, pero no Si María y José estuvieran buscando un hogar para Jesús, ¿elegirían tu casa y todo lo que contiene? Hoy en día hay tantos problemas en el mundo y creo que muchos de ellos comienzan en casa. El mundo está sufriendo porque no hay paz en la familia. Tenemos tantos miles de hogares rotos. Lord Jesus, God and Man, Into this earth you plunged Yourself, swaddled and surrounded by the love of a family. You wanted for nothing. You lived in austere poverty, but knew not the emptiness of want. You had no place to lay your head, but slumbered peacefully. You already had pursuers, but You knew only adorers. You were at all times safe, because You entrusted yourself to family life. It is a family that received you into this world and it is family life that still protects you now. Savior of the World and Lord of the Family, have mercy on our family and bless us. Amen. Let the earth, therefore, rejoice and the Church exult - she, the fruitful mother of so many heavenly champions and of such glorious virtues. ... The precious death of any martyr deserves high praise because of his heroic confession; the death of these children is precious in the sight of God because of the beatitude they gained so quickly. For already at the beginning of their lives they pass on. The end of the present life is for them the beginning of glory. These then, whom Herod’s cruelty tore as sucklings from their mothers’ bosom, are justly hailed as 'infant martyr flowers'; they were the Church’s first blossoms, matured by the frost of persecution during the cold winter of unbelief." - St. Augustine on the Feast of the Holy Innocents. .............................................................................................................................................................
