A Message to the Sangha

Dear Sangha Friends,

We write to share an important update with openness and care.

Katsel Meditation Sterling will pause all in-person activities at our headquarters for the remainder of 2026. This decision was made thoughtfully and with the long-term benefit of the sangha and the teachings in mind.

During this time, several board members will be entering periods of retreat, travel, and focused Dharma practice. This includes time dedicated to study, contemplation, sadhana recitation, and meditation, allowing the teachings to be fully integrated through lived experience. We trust this period of practice will strengthen our ability to serve beings with humility, clarity, and sincerity in the future.

Online teachings with Venerable Lama Konchok Sonam will continue throughout 2026 and remain available through our website. We warmly encourage everyone to remain connected through these offerings.

We also encourage the sangha to use this time to deepen personal practice at home. Please download the prayer books, set aside time for daily meditation, continue studying and practicing the Buddha-Dharma, and attend the online teachings with sincerity and consistency.

For those wishing to continue in-person practice during this period, we encourage attending teachings at the following Drikung Kagyu lineage–affiliated centers:

Drikung Meditation Center
https://www.drikungboston.org/

Three Rivers Tibetan Cultural Center
https://www.threeriverstibetancc.org/

Tibetan Meditation Center
https://www.drikungtmc.com/

Drikung Dharma Surya Center
https://drikungdharmasurya.org/

The Dharma is not confined to a single place. Wherever sincere practice arises, the blessings of the lineage continue.

May this period support stability, insight, and compassion for all beings.

May all beings benefit.

With gratitude and loving-kindness,
Katsel Meditation Sterling

The Thirty-Seven Practices of an Awakened Heart

{A contemporary poetic scripture inspired by Ngülchu Thogme Zangpo (1297–1371) A humble interpretation and offering by Ngakpa Konchok Gyaltshen during retreat, dedicated to the awakening of compassion and wisdom for the benefit of all beings.

Preface ~

A gift of compassion and quiet insight,
offered to all who wish to live with peace of heart and clarity of mind.
These verses are a humble reflection of the original Thirty-Seven Practices
composed by the monk Ngülchu Thogme Zangpo,
whose words continue to guide countless hearts toward understanding and love.

Each reflection is a gentle doorway through which the heart may awaken to its true nature. They remind us that peace begins with a single kind thought,
that mindfulness is the seed of wisdom, and that compassion is the light by which all beings find their way home.

Read them slowly. Let each word become a breath of stillness and care.
May their meaning settle deep within you, and may the goodness that awakens in your heart become a cause of peace and happiness for all beings everywhere.

~

1. Cherish this human life, rare as a jewel found in the sea of stars.
To awaken in a world that sleeps is a sacred fortune.
Let study become understanding,
let understanding ripen into meditation,
and let meditation awaken love vast as space itself.
Through mindfulness, walk gently in the world
and lift the weight of suffering wherever it rests.

Reflection:
May this life become a lamp for those still lost in darkness.

2. Do not remain in places where greed and anger grow.
Attachment builds houses of smoke.
Hatred burns the hand it grips.
Ignorance forgets the way home.
Journey toward the fields of clarity,
where virtue, patience, and joy take root.
Every mindful step is a turning of the wheel toward freedom.

Reflection:
May I walk only where compassion guides my feet.

3. When the mind is restless, the world becomes a storm.
Harmful places test the heart,
but within hardship lies the seed of awakening.
Move toward stillness with courage.
Settle into the quiet ground beneath your thoughts.
Meditate until peace is no longer something you seek,
but something you are.

Reflection:
May every trial become the soil of wisdom.

4. All that you hold will fade like breath upon glass.
Friends part, bodies weaken, and names are forgotten.
Yet from impermanence shines a perfect teaching—
to love without grasping, to give without expecting return.
When the heart releases its need to possess,
it discovers boundless freedom in the act of letting go.

Reflection:
May I learn to love without holding, and live without fear of loss.

5. Keep company with hearts that remember the light.
Those consumed by anger will pass their fire to your hands.
Those at peace will teach you silence without words.
Choose companions whose kindness deepens your own.
To walk beside the wise is to walk toward awakening.

Reflection:
May every friendship I nurture lead to greater compassion.

6. Treasure the wise friend who shows you your reflection.
Those who awaken before you are not above you,
but mirrors polished by devotion and humility.
Their presence cuts through pride,
their guidance steadies the wavering heart.
Hold them dearer than your own comfort.
Serve them not out of obedience,
but out of love for the truth they reveal.
In honoring them, you learn to honor awakening itself.

Reflection:
May I recognize wisdom when it stands before me,
and follow it with a humble, open heart.

7. Take refuge in that which cannot deceive.
No worldly power can shield the heart from its own unrest.
Kings fall. Nations burn. Wealth turns to dust.
But compassion, wisdom, and mindfulness never betray.
These are the true refuges—
the awakened ones, their teaching, and the living path of practice.
Turn toward them as a weary traveler turns toward shade.
Within their embrace, fear dissolves into understanding.

Reflection:
May I take refuge only in what leads to freedom.

8. Even when danger rises, do no harm.
All suffering ripens from seeds of unkindness.
To answer cruelty with cruelty
is to water those same roots again.
When your integrity is tested,
let virtue become your armor and compassion your sword.
Better to lose everything than to lose your humanity.

Reflection:
May my thoughts, words, and deeds never stray from gentleness.

9. The joys of this world vanish as dew upon grass.
Pleasure cannot be held, nor sorrow forever escaped.
The wise see through both and seek a greater peace—
the stillness beyond change,
the liberation that neither comes nor goes.
To live for that awakening is the highest joy.

Reflection:
May I remember that true happiness is born of freedom.

10. The heart that awakens does so for all.
Every being, once mother or child to another,
wanders through the same oceans of pain.
To seek your own happiness while others drown
is to forget that their breath sustains your own.
Awaken not for yourself alone,
but for the world that beats within you.
Let compassion become the mind that never sleeps.

Reflection:
May I live so that all beings find peace through my awakening.

11. The seed of suffering is self-concern.
From the wish to protect only oneself, countless sorrows bloom.
From the wish to free all beings, every joy unfolds.
Let compassion overturn the tyranny of “me.”
Give your peace to others as rain gives itself to earth.
In that surrender, discover the boundless field of awakening.

Reflection:
May I exchange my comfort for the pain of others
until only love remains where “I” once stood.

12. Even when wronged, let generosity be your answer.
If another steals what you hold dear,
offer them the peace they could not find in possessions.
Give your body to service, your words to healing,
your merit to the welfare of all.
The open hand never knows poverty.

Reflection:
May I meet loss with the wealth of giving.

13. When harm comes without cause, meet it with compassion.
If cruelty strikes though you are blameless,
take into your heart the sorrow of the one who harms.
Their anger is their illness; their hatred, their wound.
Transform the blow into a prayer
that none may suffer as they now suffer.

Reflection:
May my heart remain unshaken,
turning every wound into medicine for the world.

14. When others defame you, let your words be kind.
If the world echoes with your faults,
answer with truth spoken gently, or not at all.
Silence can be thunder to ignorance.
To praise the one who condemns you
is to master the storm within.

Reflection:
May my speech be a mirror of patience and wisdom.

15. When insulted before many, bow instead of burning.
The one who exposes you is your hidden teacher.
Through humility, pride crumbles, and freedom begins.
See your critic as a lantern lighting unseen corners of the mind.
Thank them silently, and walk on in peace.

Reflection:
May I welcome correction as the doorway to awakening.

16. Even love may turn to enmity; let yours remain a refuge.
When one you’ve sheltered turns against you,
do not close the door of your heart.
Pity the pain that made them forget your kindness.
Hold them as a mother holds a fevered child—
not because they are gentle, but because you are.

Reflection:
May my compassion outlast every betrayal.

17. When scorned by those you deemed lesser, offer respect.
Pride is a mirror that distorts both faces.
Bow to the one who belittles you;
in that bow, arrogance dissolves like frost beneath the sun.
Honor the truth that all beings are teachers in disguise.

Reflection:
May humility guard my heart from the poison of pride.

18. Even amid poverty, sickness, and blame, keep courage alive.
When the body weakens and the world forgets your name,
let patience become your wealth, compassion your home.
Carry the sorrows of others as a healer carries herbs,
knowing that service is greater than comfort.

Reflection:
May I never tire of bearing the world with love.

19. Fame and fortune are mirages upon hot sand.
The crowd’s praise fades as quickly as its song.
Riches cannot purchase a moment of peace.
See glory for what it is—dust in sunlight.
Walk through it without vanity, and leave no footprint behind.

Reflection:
May I be content with simplicity and free from the hunger of praise.
20. The fiercest enemy dwells within.
You may conquer nations and still be slave to anger.
Subdue the heart’s rebellion with love’s own army.
When compassion commands, hatred surrenders.
Victory over oneself is the only lasting triumph.

Reflection:
May the battle within me end in peace for all beings.

21. Desire never rests; it only asks for more.
Pleasure promises peace yet leaves thirst in its wake.
As salt water cannot still hunger, craving cannot fill the heart.
Turn from what enslaves toward what awakens.
Let contentment be your wealth, simplicity your crown.

Reflection:
May I drink from the clear spring of sufficiency and teach others to do the same.

22. All things arise within the mind’s own mirror.
The world you touch is woven of perception.
From beginningless time its nature has been clear and vast.
When you see that seer and seen are not two,
the cage of separation falls away and love stands revealed.

Reflection:
May I look upon all forms and know them as expressions of one compassionate mind.

23. Beauty appears and fades like rainbows over summer fields.
Delight in it, but do not mistake it for forever.
To cling to passing color is to miss the sky itself.
Hold wonder lightly, and the world will remain luminous.

Reflection:
May I enjoy without attachment and love without grasping.

24. Suffering too is a dream that asks to be understood.
Pain teaches the truth of illusion;
loss shows the emptiness that frees.
When hardship visits, greet it as a messenger of insight.
See through its mask and find compassion waiting there.

Reflection:
May every sorrow I meet open the gate to wisdom and mercy.

25. Give without bargain or boundary.
Offer body, speech, and mind to the good of all beings.
A single generous act can turn lifetimes of darkness into dawn.
Give not for reward but because giving is your nature.
When you disappear into the act of offering, only love remains.

Reflection:
May my generosity know no measure and serve the awakening of every heart.

26. Guard your conduct as the root of all virtue.
Ethics are the ground where awakening takes root.
Without integrity, even noble dreams decay.
Let your choices be guided by conscience,
not fear of judgment, nor desire for praise.
Live as if every breath were a vow to protect all beings.

Reflection:
May each action I take sow peace in the minds of others.

27. Those who harm you are unseen treasures.
They reveal your patience, test your love, and mirror your pride.
Welcome them as you would rare teachers.
Through their cruelty, you learn the strength of compassion.
To meet anger with forgiveness is the alchemy of saints.

Reflection:
May I see every adversary as a guide toward boundless mercy.

28. Strive with the devotion of one whose hair is aflame.
The wise do not delay goodness until comfort returns.
They act now, as if the world depended on a single kind thought—
because it does. Diligence is the lamp that keeps the path lit through lifetimes.

Reflection:
May I never grow weary of doing what heals the hearts of others.

29. Stillness and insight are twin wings of awakening.
When the heart is tranquil, it sees deeply.
When it sees clearly, peace endures.
Sit until silence opens the secret gate of understanding.
Meditate not to escape the world,
but to love it with unclouded eyes.

Reflection:
May meditation reveal the truth beyond grasping and fear.

30. Wisdom is the mother of all perfections.
Without her, generosity is blind, ethics falter, patience wanes,
and meditation drifts without direction.
See with eyes that make no separation
between giver, gift, and receiver.
That vision is the boundless field of enlightenment.

Reflection:
May wisdom illuminate my mind so compassion may guide my every deed.

31. Examine your own heart as a gardener tends the soil.
Weeds of pride and deceit hide easily beneath good intentions.
Look deeply, pull them out with gentleness and care.
To see one’s faults clearly is not shame—it is freedom beginning to breathe.

Reflection:
May awareness reveal my hidden errors and give me courage to transform them.

32. Speak not of another’s shortcomings.
The words that wound another soul return to the one who utters them.
Protect the dignity of those who walk beside you on the path.
Silence born of compassion is sweeter than victory in debate.

Reflection:
May my speech always heal and never divide.

33. Beware the subtle chains of gain and recognition.
Honor and wealth intoxicate the mind more deeply than wine.
They steal the quiet hour meant for meditation
and turn generosity into commerce.
Walk lightly through the world; leave ownership behind you like old clothes.

Reflection:
May I value truth above comfort, service above acclaim.

34. Let every word be a balm, not a blade.
Harsh speech wounds where no hand can reach.
Even truth can harm when spoken without love.
Let kindness shape every syllable,
so your voice becomes an instrument of peace.

Reflection:
May all who hear me find rest, not harm, in my words.

35. Guard the gate of the mind.
When craving and anger first stir, meet them with mindfulness.
A spark can be quenched with a breath;
a blaze devours the forest.
Awareness is the hand that prevents the flame.

Reflection:
May I remain awake the moment desire or hatred arises.

36. In all you do, look inward first.
Ask quietly, “What moves me now?”
If the heart is steady, the deed will be pure.
If confusion reigns, return to stillness.
Mindfulness and awareness are the twin guardians of the path.

Reflection:
May every action of body, speech, and mind arise from clarity and love.

37. Dedicate every virtue for the good of all.
Whatever goodness you have gathered—
each act, each breath, each spark of understanding—
offer it freely to the endless sky of beings.
Through the wisdom that knows giver and gift as one,
let merit become light dissolving every darkness.

Reflection:
May the fruits of these practices ripen as awakening for all beings everywhere.

Closing Dedication

These verses are but echoes of the ancient heart of compassion.
They are written for those who seek peace without borders,
who wish to live in wisdom and to love without end.
By remembering them, reciting them, or living them even for a moment,
may suffering lessen, may kindness grow,
and may the world itself awaken.
