Thank you to Gene Grimshaw for repairing and replacing our flag at Lowell Cemetery. Gene honors his great grandparents, Albina Jane Crenshaw Rogers (1856-1934) and John William Rogers (1851-1933), who arrived in the area about 1884 when it was known as Moccasin Rock. When the post office opened in 1893, it was named Lowell. John Rogers served as Lowell postmaster from 1893 to 1897. Their grave marker is shown in the lower right corner of this photo.

John Thomas Cook (1840-1911) obit appeared in the Dublin Progress on July 28, 1911 and Stephenville Empire August 4, 1911
"“Death of Uncle John Cook. Uncle John T. Cook a pioneer citizen of Texas and of Erath County died at his home on Armstrong Creek Wednesday of last week, the 19th July, after an illness of nearly three months and at an age which would have reached seventy-two on the 6th day of next month. Burial took place at Lowell Cemetery, near the old homestead at 4 o’clock the following evening. Deceased had suffered with lung affection for several years and his health had been very poorly for the past year. Uncle John Cook was one of the most widely known and prosperous planters in all this section. He came to Texas from Georgia thirty-five years ago, and settled on the place, where he died and where he leaves a valuable land estate of about 3 sections. It is on this property that the celebrated moccasin rock is located which originally meant a narrow defile of Armstrong Creek with solid upright rock on either side and bottom and upon which this writer has many times viewed the outlines of moccasins drawn on the upright rock banks and studied varied and to us meaningless hieroglyphics about them to have said to be drawn there by the Indians whose last disturbances in this locality Uncle John assisted with his trusty rifle to quell. He was a confederate veteran, having joined the service in a Georgia regiment and fought through the conflict. He was a member of the Masonic order and was buried with the honors of that organization. He made profession of religion before his death. Surviving him in his aged companion, now sixty-eight years, besides the following sons and daughters: Mack Cook residing in Oklahoma, Lee Cook of Childress, Hugh Cook of Knox County, Dud Cook at home, Lum Cook of New Mexico, Findley Cook at home. Mrs. T.R. Lewis of Beaver County, Oklahoma, Mrs. J.D. Rogers of Eastland County, Mrs. Jack Wilkes and Mrs. J.N. O’Bannon of New Mexico, and Mrs. Bob Bailey who resides on the home place. Deceased left a will assigning all of his property to his beloved wife and naming his three oldest sons, James Mack, Lee and Hugh as administrators without bond. "

We our committee appointed to draft resolutions of respect in memory of Bro. J.T. Cook, who died on July 19, 1911 beg leave to submit our report as follows. Bro. Cook was a charter member of Lingleville Lodge No. 752 A.F. & A.M. and was a true and faithful brother among us. In his death this lodge has lost a worthy brother and our country has been deprived of one of its oldest and most esteemed citizens. We the members of Lingleville Masonic Lodge extend our sympathy to the bereaved friends and relatives of the deceased brother _ C.C. Martin, C.M. Hilliard, W.F. Jenkins (committee)
