Staten Island has 28,000 Jews (other sources say 50,000) and the closest synagogue to the South Beach area is a 2 hours walking. We moved here to fill a much needed gap; we opened in December of 2011 the Jewish Russian Learning Center of South Beach to provide a Jewish community for the Jews in this area. We offer a wide range of activities like Shabbos services, Shabbos meals, Adult Education, Su

nday School, Holiday services, Tefilin and mezuzah campaign, events, life cycle services (bris, bar/bat mitzvah, funeral, weddings...) .There is something for every age and level of Jewish observance. This variety of programs and support for children and adults alike helps each one in their journey that begins with a step by step process to awaken the spark within children and adults. The steps include thought processes and exercises designed to begin their journey and continue their personal and spiritual growth. The path includes emotional, spiritual, educational and practical steps in personal spiritual growth. Through the steps Jewish practices become deeply relevant, meaningful and personal as well as useful and accessible being easily incorporated into daily life. To support the personal awakening of the spark, as well as the growth of our community, the center provides an assortment of programs for member involvement.

I got a call to come check some mezuzos.
As I started opening the cases, I was shocked—every single one had a “mezuzah” that was just paper. From the start they were wrapped inside out —they were completely fake.

The family paid for kosher mezuzos and had no idea. Most likely, they trusted the person who installed them.

A mezuzah is not just a symbol—the protection comes from the kosher parchment inside, written properly by a qualified sofer - scribe. Without that, it’s just a case on the door.

Always make sure to buy mezuzos from a trusted, reliable source.
