With profound sadness, we report the passing of Cantor Mordechai Edry (z'l). He is survived by his partner, Nadia Sheyer, and his loving son, Sandy. Born in Meknes, Morocco, in 1947, he was the youngest of twelve siblings.

Cantor Edry served in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) from 1967 to 1970, fighting in the Six-Day War. In 1970, he arrived in the United States, where he initially worked as a Hebrew teacher on Long Island. During his second year in the United States, he was invited to serve as the cantor at Elmont Jewish Center, which inspired him to pursue formal training as a cantor. He studied at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York. In addition to his passion for spiritual leadership, he also obtained his CPA certificate. He opened his small accounting firm in the Orthodox community in Brooklyn.

For over 40 years, from 1983 to the present, he has been a dedicated clergy member of our community. During his time at CBJ, he devoted himself to serving as a Cantor, renowned for his beautiful chanting. This also includes the recent commissioning of a Sephardic Torah by Cantor Mordechai Edry (z'l) in Israel and its return to the United States, a beautiful addition to the CBJ community, accompanied by a lovely dedication ceremony. This Torah is actively used in services. He also dedicated new Siddurim and Purim Megillah books in memory of the recent passing of his brother and sister.

He always expressed his love for us, saying we are the most beautiful synagogue on Staten Island. He will be greatly missed for his role in officiating services at the bimah and for being a key spiritual leader for CBJ and the community.

May his memory be for a blessing

Israel was forced into this impossible situation by those who planned and executed Oct. 7. Yet we have been confronted with denials, justifications and even glorifications of the Hamas attack.

Dear Friend(s):

As a community response to several student walkouts at our Public Schools which are blatantly antisemitic and biased against Israel, the Council of Jewish Organizations of Staten Island (COJO) has decided that we as a community must make a Rally/Press Conference in support and in solidarity of Jewish students, teachers and staff at public schools and send a loud and clear message that the Staten Island Jewish community stands united in our opposition to antisemitism and Israel bias at our public schools. We also want to send a strong message that fear and intimidation to any Jewish person who finds themselves on a public-school campus will not be tolerated and must be treated as hate against all peace-loving people.

This Rally/Press Conference is scheduled to take place on Monday, April 8, 2024, 12:30PM at 1200 Manor Road, Staten Island, New York 10314 next to Wagner Highschool. It is our understanding that students at Wagner Highschool are scheduling their second walk around this time.

We are asking that that all those attending this Rally/Press Conference come with Israeli flags and appropriate respectful signs and banners showing our united solidarity with the Jewish students, teachers, and staff on campus.

We also ask that you congregate only in the designated area where the Rally/Press Conference is set to take place and be respectful and obey all directives of the NYPD.
We also ask that you act respectful to everyone and not engage any students or individual in a disrespectful and brash manner.

In the aftermath of October 7, issues of antisemitism and free speech have roiled college campuses, raising serious questions in the Jewish community and well beyond about the nature of higher education in American society.

Join us at JTS on Monday, April 8 at 7:00 p.m. for this important and timely exploration of how institutions of higher education can preserve the right of free expression while combatting antisemitic harassment and ensuring that Jewish students, faculty, and staff can feel safe, supported, and welcome. Speakers Sigal Ben-Porath, MRMJJ Presidential Professor of Education at the University of Pennsylvania, and David Schizer, Dean Emeritus and Harvey R. Miller Professor of Law & Economics at Columbia Law School, will discuss how universities can foster both free speech and a sense of inclusion and belonging, so that all members of the campus community can flourish.

This program is part of “Antisemitism and Allyship: Assessing the Present, Imagining the Future,” a convening at JTS on April 8-9, 2024.
