Remember And Honor | May 25, 2026:
A few years ago, a teacher asked her students to bring a photograph of someone they considered a hero. The next day, the classroom was filled with pictures of athletes, actors, musicians, and famous leaders. As each student explained why they chose their hero, the teacher noticed one young boy quietly holding an old, worn photograph.
When it was his turn, he walked to the front of the class and held up the picture. It wasn't of a celebrity or someone who fills social media news feeds; instead, it was a young soldier in uniform.
The boy explained, "This is my grandfather. He never became famous, and most people don't know his name. He served in the military during the war, and some of his friends never returned home. He always told me that freedom isn't free and taught me that real heroes are the ones who sacrifice for others."
The room fell quiet. Suddenly, the conversation shifted from fame, popularity, or accomplishments to focus on sacrifice.
As we commemorate another Memorial Day, let us also reflect on the blessings of our freedom by remembering and honoring those who have served our nation, especially those who gave their lives in battle. This perspective is particularly important today, as we live in an age marked by increasing division and harsh rhetoric.
By remembering their sacrifices, we can unite in a common gratitude for the freedoms we enjoy. Their willingness to lay down their lives for others serves as a powerful reminder that the greatest acts of service often require the greatest sacrifices.
Furthermore, reflecting on the blessings of freedom here in America brings to mind the words of Christ, who declared, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends” (John 15:13).
With this in mind, may we be forever grateful for our country and even more filled with gratitude for our gracious Savior.
