Each year, on the Sunday between Christmas and New Yearโs Day, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Holy Family โ Jesus, Mary and Joseph. As we continue to celebrate the birth of our Savior, we should also rejoice that he chose to come into the world as part of a family. This choice sanctified family life and provides us today with a model of what our own families are called to be. Consider the silent moments that these three would have shared in Bethlehem, the difficulties of journeying to Egypt, or the hidden, daily life of Nazareth. Mary and Joseph trusted in God who called them to such a great purpose, took decisive action to follow Godโs will, and, before Jesus ever preached to the crowds of Galilee, were the first to share with others the Good News of salvation.
Each of us can model ourselves after the Holy Family โ trusting in God, following his will and proclaiming the Good News. Today is a reminder of our own call to holiness and the mission of family life. The joy of this Christmas season is not meant to be kept to ourselves; rather, we must allow it to grow in our hearts and our families so we can bring it to a world desperate to know Jesus Christ.
