"One of the greatest antidotes to 'small-god thinking' is to consider God’s commitment to his own glory. This is to see that God fervently seeks to display the greatness and beauty and loveliness of all his perfections—his love, mercy, power, wisdom, sovereignty, righteousness, justice–and also seeks after our love, trust, worship and delight in and towards him and his perfections."

One of my passions for our church is that we have a big view of God in a world where small views of God are abundant. A small view of God runs along these lines of thought: This is how many people view the God of the Bible, and I would say it is the […]

This Sunday, we begin a sermon series through the Gospel of Luke. This is the longest account we have of the life, teachings, workings, claims, death and resurrection of Jesus: some 19k words in the original.

Whether you are familiar or not with Jesus and Christianity, or have questions, this is a great time to jump in and consider this story that has changed the world, and changed the lives of millions of people.

Join us Sundays at 1030a.

This coming week is our annual Roots Church Family Camp at Rasar State Park. A couple important things to note. First, as camp runs through Sunday, our annual Sunday gathering will be at Rasar State Park, Sunday, August 23 at 1030a. There will be no gathering/service at the Roots Church building this Sunday! We'd love for as many as possible to come join us at camp for worship. It's less than an hour drive from Stanwood. We are in the Elk group camp, which is across the street from the main park entrance. Reach out to Derek if you need directions, 770-714-3865. If you are not able to join us, we encourage you to gather with another local gospel-proclaiming, Bible-preaching, Jesus-loving church.

Secondly, on Saturday evening at camp we will have two annual events that are lots of fun, and which you are invited to come up for. At 5p, we will have a potluck "Low Country Boil" (think The Crab Pot, but with sausage, shrimp, potatoes, onions and more!). There is always lots of food, so come join us. And then around 7p we will have our annual "No-talent talent show." Whether you want to participate with a "talent" or not, come and be entertained by the many talents within our body.

A couple things to note about this Sunday (6.28):

Stanwood's annual car show begins at 9A. The show requires a full road closure in front of Roots Church. Please plan to use alternate routes to get to church this Sunday. See images below.

Also, we have pushed back the time of the church family picnic at Church Creek Park to 1P so that everyone has some time to check out the car show. If you haven't signed up for the potluck, please sign-up by Friday! We're providing the meat and the grill. Bring a side to share. The pavilion and bathrooms are available as well as the lawn for games. The park has frisbee golf for those that want to play.

Our community has been rocked by a lot of unexpected, heart-wrenching loss recently, including a number of deaths of despair. The causes are various, and the situations complex. But the results are heavy and sorrowful for many. In a small(ish) community like ours, losses affect an outsized proportion of the populace, and when a number of them happen within a short time-span, the community as a whole feels the weight.

I wanted to offer a few reflections as I am processing these tragedies, in hopes that they will be of some help and encouragement to others.

"I trust that God’s word is true and relevant to our situation, just as it has been for thousands of years. The power of AI is truly incredible. But there is much that AI can’t do, and can’t replace. Here are four ways that God’s word speaks clearly and powerfully into our current moment."

AI is everywhere today, and it’s influence on our lives and society is only increasing by the day. Some of you experience this in your work, perhaps even find your job changing significantly because of AI. Some of you experience this in your leisurely time scrolling, looking up information, or pla...

This will not be a long blog. My goal is simply to get you to read biographies of Christian men and women, that you might be encouraged. I have found the reading of good Christian biographies to be one of the most encouraging practices in my faith, outside of reading the Bible. On my sabbatical […...

We begin a short series through the New Testament book/letter of Titus this coming Sunday.

Paul’s letter to Titus is short, to the point, and readily practical. Throughout the letter, two themes continually emerge: the importance of holding firm to sound doctrine, and the call to be devoted to good works. Paul is clear about the role of good works: they do not, and cannot, save us (3:5), but those saved by God’s mercy are to be zealous and devoted to good works (2:14; 3:8). By doing this, they will “adorn the doctrine of God our Savior” (2:10), that is, show its beauty and attractiveness. The context for these good works is in the church (2:1-8), in the home (2:5), in the workplace (2:9-10), and in relationships in general (3:1-2).
