"I trust that God’s word is true and relevant to our situation, just as it has been for thousands of years. The power of AI is truly incredible. But there is much that AI can’t do, and can’t replace. Here are four ways that God’s word speaks clearly and powerfully into our current moment."

AI is everywhere today, and it’s influence on our lives and society is only increasing by the day. Some of you experience this in your work, perhaps even find your job changing significantly because of AI. Some of you experience this in your leisurely time scrolling, looking up information, or pla...

This will not be a long blog. My goal is simply to get you to read biographies of Christian men and women, that you might be encouraged. I have found the reading of good Christian biographies to be one of the most encouraging practices in my faith, outside of reading the Bible. On my sabbatical […...

We begin a short series through the New Testament book/letter of Titus this coming Sunday.

Paul’s letter to Titus is short, to the point, and readily practical. Throughout the letter, two themes continually emerge: the importance of holding firm to sound doctrine, and the call to be devoted to good works. Paul is clear about the role of good works: they do not, and cannot, save us (3:5), but those saved by God’s mercy are to be zealous and devoted to good works (2:14; 3:8). By doing this, they will “adorn the doctrine of God our Savior” (2:10), that is, show its beauty and attractiveness. The context for these good works is in the church (2:1-8), in the home (2:5), in the workplace (2:9-10), and in relationships in general (3:1-2).

"I wanted to take some time to address an issue that a number of people have asked about: The biblical call to examine oneself before partaking of Communion, and the solemnity and seriousness this gives to communion."

I wanted to take some time to address an issue that a number of people have asked about: The biblical call to examine oneself before partaking of Communion, and the solemnity and seriousness this gives to communion.  If you have read Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 11, you likely have come away wit...

It is tempting to always end a sermon with a clear action step, with some charge to go “do” something. And it is probably the case, that many people come to church desiring this: “Just tell me what I need to do.”

At the end of this past week’s sermon, I made a point that perhaps could use a bit more explanation. I said: “You may notice that I’m not leaving you with any specific actions steps, and I often don’t leave you with action steps. This isn’t because there are no action steps in God’s word...

The turn of the calendar presents a natural time for reflecting on the past, and considering the future. Over the past almost nine years Roots Church has existed, I have taken this opportunity to reflect and consider the state of our church. Here is some of what’s on my heart and mind as we enter ...

In the sermon text yesterday (Genesis 28:10-22), God appears to Jacob in a dream. When Jacob wakes up, he realizes that this was no ordinary dream, and responds with, “Surely, the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it.” And then we are told, “And he was afraid and said, ‘How awesome [...
