One of the most effective teaching tools in the classroom is the use of examples. For instance, calculus, physics, and chemistry students on university campuses purchase very large books that contain examples of how to solve various problems they may encounter in their course of study. When it comes to our spiritual instruction, God sometimes uses examples to teach us about obedience. This was the case in Jeremiah’s day. God used the Rechabites, a nomadic tribe who faithfully adhered to a strict set of rules, to demonstrate to His people what faithful obedience looks like.

Read Jeremiah 35:5-19 and the comments for session 9 in your Personal Study Guide. As you read, identify ways the Rechabites kept their commitments and ways the people of Judah had failed to obey God.

Many people love redeeming coupons. They clip them from a magazine or receive them in the mail and apply them against the cost of items they want to buy. The merchant gets to sell the item, and the buyer makes a discounted purchase by redeeming the coupon. Our God is in the redeeming business, too—but He redeems people, not coupons.

As you read Jeremiah 31:23-34, look for words and phrases that demonstrate God’s commitment to redeem and restore His people. Use the comments in session 8 of the Personal Study Guide for additional insight.

Most people would agree leaders should possess good character. Often when leaders fail morally, their followers rationalize, “Well if they can do that, so can I.” Leaders must lead not only by words, but also by example. Through Jeremiah, God promised that one day He would give His people a trustworthy and righteous Ruler. This Ruler has already come; He is the Lord Jesus Christ who will reign on His throne for eternity.

As you read Jeremiah 23:1-12, underline the actions of Judah’s leaders that led to God’s response. Use the comments in session 6 of the Personal Study Guide to assist you. In contrast to their unfaithfulness, how is God’s faithfulness evidenced?

The assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary became the catalyst that led to the outbreak of World War I. H. G. Wells dubbed it “The War to End All Wars.” It ended with the signing of an armistice agreement on November 11, 1918. The end of the war, though, did not usher in a lasting peace. What we really need is a peace that is only available through Jesus. He offers a peace that surpasses human understanding.

As you read through John 14:16-29, mark the promises made by Jesus. Review the comments for session 4 in your Personal Study Guide to help you. How do the promises define the benefits of following Him?

Whether it is a military deployment, business trip, or trip to the store, goodbyes can cause anxiety. We want to know when the person will be coming back. Somehow, knowing the exact projected time eases the anxiety and we can look forward to being reunited. Assurance of a return produces confidence to endure. We also should have confidence as we anticipate Jesus’s return.

As you read John 13:31-14:6 and the comments for session 3 in your Personal Study Guide, look for examples of the disciples not understanding what Jesus was saying. How do you think their understanding changed when they looked back on these events months and even years later?

Most of us have a favorite fruit. At some point, a seed was planted that led to the producing of that fruit. While the seed may look nothing like the fruit, it sacrificed itself in producing the plant or tree that eventually led to the piece of fruit we enjoy. Unless the seed “died,” it could not have taken root and produced growth. Even so, Jesus predicted He had to die to provide eternal life.

Focus on John 12:20-33, reading the comments for session 2 in your Personal Study Guide. Highlight words that point to actions that indicate a person believes in Jesus. How does becoming a believer in Jesus affect a person’s life?

This week, we begin our study of the first half of John’s Gospel. While many people think of Bethlehem as the beginning place for Jesus, this is not where John begins his Gospel. To appreciate what happened in Bethlehem, we must travel back through time eternal. Then, we may understand the baby of Bethlehem was the eternal God who took on human flesh to save human beings.

Read John 1:1-14 and the comments for session 1 in your Personal Study Guide. Number the descriptors used for Jesus. What do these descriptors reveal about Jesus?
