The Growing Times
by Joyce Meyer - posted March 30, 2012

Enfolded in love, let us grow up in every way and in all things into Him Who is the Head, [even] Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One). —Ephesians 4:15

If you look back over your life, you will see that you never grow during easy times; you grow during hard times. During the easy times that come, you are able to enjoy what you have gained during the hard times. This is really a life principle; it is just the way it works. You work all week, then you receive your paycheck and enjoy your weekend off.

You exercise, eat right, and take good care of yourself, then you enjoy a healthy body. You clean your house, or basement, or garage, and then you enjoy your neat, clean surroundings each time you walk through them. I am reminded of Hebrews 12:11, For the time being no discipline brings joy, but seems grievous and painful; but afterwards it yields a peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

To be truly victorious, we must grow to the place where we are not afraid of hard times but are actually challenged by them. Because it is during these hard times that we grow.

Stand Firm

If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all.
Isaiah 7:9

Sometimes we hold on to that which is unsure, afraid to reach out for the thing that is sure. You cannot have both. You must leave the shaky house to move into the house built on the rock. You can't live in two houses or kingdoms at the same time.

There are only two kingdoms: Fear and FAITH. If you are walking in fear you are not in faith. Faith in God will cause the impossible to manifest in your life. Faith says that "it will happen" while fear says, "it will never happen."

Without faith it is impossible to please God, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him (Hebrews 11:6).

Your heart is purified by faith, you are sanctified by faith, you live by faith, you are justified by faith, you have access by faith, and you stand by faith. It would be a foolish farmer who sowed seeds not expecting a harvest. For he has faith that because he sowed seeds, he will reap crops.

To seek is to search out, investigate, crave, demand and worship. How do you seek God? God honors those who actively and persistently pursue Him-in faith.

The Blessings of Meditation
by Joyce Meyer - posted March 29, 2012

My son, attend to my words; consent and submit to my sayings. Let them not depart from your sight; keep them in the center of your heart. For they are life to those who find them, healing and health to all their flesh.
—Proverbs 4:20-22

In these verses, the writer used the words, attend to my words, which is another way of exhorting us to meditate. I love the fact that God not only frequently tells us to meditate—to ponder seriously—His Word, but He frequently promises results. It's as if God says, "Okay, Joyce, if you meditate, here's what I'm going to do for you."

In this passage, the promise is life and health. Isn't that amazing? It's even a promise that when you contemplate and brood over the Bible, it will affect your physical body.

We've known for a long time that when we fill our minds with healthy, positive thoughts, it affects our body and improves our health. This is just another way of repeating this truth. Or take the opposite viewpoint: Suppose we fill our minds with negative thoughts and remind ourselves how frail we are or how sick we were the day before. We soon become so filled with self-pity and self-defeating thoughts that we get even sicker.

In the previous pages, I've already mentioned the idea of prosperity (see Psalm 1 and Joshua 1:8). I believe that by "prosperity," God means that we'll be enriched and prosper in every part of our lives. It's not a promise of more material wealth, but an assurance of being able to enjoy all the wonderful blessings we have.

Recently when I meditated on several passages in the Bible, I realized God was showing me that the Word has hidden treasures in it—powerful, life-giving secrets—which God wants to reveal to us. They are there for those who muse, ponder, and contemplate the Word of God.

What we often forget is that God wants our fellowship, our company, and our time with Him. If we want a deep relationship with our heavenly Father, we have to make quality time for God. I recently heard someone say, "Quality time comes out of quantity times." In other words, it's only as we spend time with God on a regular, daily basis that we have those special, life-changing moments. We can't program them to happen, but if we're there on a daily basis, God will cause some of those times to be quality times of special blessing.

D. L. Moody once said that the Bible would keep us from sin, or sin would keep us from the Bible. That's the principle here. As we concentrate on God's Word and allow it to fill our thoughts, we will push away all desire to sin or to displease God in any way. We become more deeply rooted in Him. Again, think of it in the negative. When our mind remains focused on our problems all the time, we become consumed with them. If we meditate on what's wrong with others, we see even more flaws and faults. But when we concentrate on God's Word, light comes into our souls.

I want to go back one more time to that powerful statement in Philippians 4:8. No matter which translation or paraphrase we read it in, the message is powerful and exactly what we need to do to condition our minds for victory.

Here's Eugene Peterson's paraphrase in The Message: "Summing it all up, friends, I'd say you'll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse."

Dear Father in heaven, teach me the blessings of pondering Your Word, of filling my heart and mind with Your spiritual manna. May I grow into maturity and become more and more like Your Son, Jesus. It's in His name that I pray. Amen.

You Are Not of This World
by Joyce Meyer - posted March 28, 2012

These are [still] in the world . . . [but] they are not of the world . . . just as I am not of the world . . . Keep and protect them from the evil one. —John 17:11,14-15

People in the world are under such intense pressure they are often hurried, rude, short-tempered, and frustrated. They experience financial and marital stress and the stress of raising children in a changing and uncertain world.

Because of mental stress on the job and physical stress from overwork and frayed nerves, some people seem to be time bombs on the verge of explosion.
As a believer, you do not need to succumb to the stress that affects people who do not know Jesus as their Savior. You do not have to operate in the world’s system.

God has provided ways for you to live in the world without being affected by that type of stress. Jesus is the Prince of Peace, and following the leading of the Holy Spirit will always lead you to peace and joy, not to anxiety and frustration.

Petition with Thanksgiving
by Joyce Meyer - posted March 27, 2012

And God’s peace [shall be yours, that tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and being content with its earthly lot of whatever sort that is, that peace] which transcends all understanding shall garrison and mount guard over your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. —Philippians 4:7

We can petition the Lord for things we need every morning. God’s Word tells us to lay our requests before Him: “Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything, but in every circumstance and in everything, by prayer and petition (definite requests), with thanksgiving, continue to make your wants known to God” (Philippians 4:6).

But don’t spend all your time with God petitioning for things. You are out of balance if your petitions outweigh your praise and thanksgiving. A heart full of thankfulness will make any day better.

Doctor's Orders
by Joyce Meyer - posted March 26, 2012

He who gives to the poor will not want, but he who hides his eyes [from their want] will have many a curse. —Proverbs 28:27

A well-known psychiatrist named Dr. Karl Menninger presented many lectures on mental health. At the end of one of them, he took questions from the audience and someone asked, “What would you advise a person to do if he or she felt a nervous breakdown coming on?”

To the audience’s surprise, Dr. Menninger responded, “Lock up your house, go across the railroad tracks, find somebody in need, and help that person.”

Whether he knew it or not, the brilliant psychiatrist gave advice that comes straight from God’s Word. Today’s Scripture says those who give to the poor “will not want.”

Another way to express the point this verse makes is to say that when we are generous, we will have no lack. Certainly, part of having “no lack” includes having peace of mind and mental well-being. Dr. Menninger prescribed the same remedy that the wise writer of Proverbs suggested in today’s verse and that Jesus Himself advised.

God knows the benefits of loving others. He knows that getting our minds off ourselves is often the best thing we do for ourselves mentally. It will stop the downward spiral of negative thoughts and turn self-focus into “others-focus.”

Perhaps this is one reason God’s instruction for believers to love other people is a commandment, not a suggestion. He requires us to do it because He knows it will not only bless the people we help; it will be good for us, too.

Love Others Today: Next time you feel depressed, anxious, or fearful, think about Dr. Menninger’s advice. Get up and go do something for someone in need.
